List Bug Still Not Fixed

A few weeks ago, I posted about how the IMDb lists suffer from a bug where making changes in a list can result in a numbering error on the site's part which throws off the numbering system entirely out of whack. This issue has been around forever, but for the past month or so it has become especially and annoyingly prevalent. I was told people are working on it, but the problem continues to persist.

This has become especially bothersome for me today, as the issue has effected three lists of mine (some a few years old), which I only made minor alterations to (deleting one name), only to have the entire thing thrown off as a result.

I know people have been able to have affected lists fixed on an individual basis in the past, so I will leave links to them in the hopes that someone can fix them for me, as well as reiterate the need for a more permanent and sitewide solution to this issue:

Update: It happened to a NEW list just now. Seriously, is anyone actually working on this issue?

Now I made a copy of this list to fix it, and immediately after adding ONE entry to this new list, it got messed up again.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

Hello @noah_goucher,

I've checked your lists:

And I haven't found anything wrong with them. Could you please provide us with more details on what happens to your lists when you do some editing? Maybe screenshots/ short video recorded would help to get a better picture of your situation.

Two of the lists had their issues resolved, thankfully, but the third still has the numbering system messed up halfway through- here's an example of what it looks like:

Furthermore, the list that got messed up last night currently looks like this on the first page-
Editing lists in this state is basically impossible as it throws the entire numbering system out of whack, resulting in a giant, disorganized mess, so I essentially have to copy everything to a brand new list to resolve it. As the lists get bigger, this becomes more time-consuming, and it becomes more aggravating when I run into the same issue not long after starting over.

Hi @noah_goucher ,

Thank you for your report of this issue. I have filed a ticket (ref. #D97097800) with the appropriate team for investigation.

The list bug is STILL happening. I even had a new entry move to the correct place, only for it to shoot up to number 1 and screw up the entire list for no reason. Why????

@noah_goucher Unfortunately this is a long-standing bug in the lists system which especially affects large lists.  The lists system is now over 13 years old and is some of the oldest remaining software on IMDb. We are actively working upon its replacement as part of the on-going design and technology migration, which will address the issues.

In the meantime, as we recently wrote here

If you have access to the IMDb iOS app via an iPhone or iPad, this is best way to manage lists on IMDb.  I have hundreds of lists, both private and public, which I manage via our app.

The web interface will improve once it moves to the new technology, but right now the iOS app is the gold standard list implementation

Hope this helps and sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.

@Col_Needham I don't have an iPhone or an iPad so that's not terribly helpful, no.
