Is it possible to compare lists?

I have made a list of (favorite) movies that I still need to see. But I want to compare it with my favorite movies list, in order to check if I haven't missed any movies, is this somehow possible?

To clarify, it was also a pain making this ''still need to watch'' list, because I had to open all movies and then add them to the list. It would have been cool if I could have simply marked them from my ''favorite movies'' list, similar to how you mark them for the watchlist, perhaps an idea for the future?

@Navin2000 Yes, you can easily do this with Advanced Title Search at https://www.imdb.com/search/title/ -- scroll down to the "Your lists" section on the left and open that section, where you will see options to include / exclude lists from the results. In your case, type the list name you want to start with in the "Include" section and the list whose results you want to exclude in the "Exclude" section and then press the "See results" button at the top. You are welcome to add other constraints to the search, for example, to limit the results to only titles made after a certain year. You can also compare two lists and see which titles are in both lists by entering the titles of both lists in the "Include" section -- enter one list name and select it and then pick the next list from the menu and select that. Finally, if you have voted for all the titles, you can also restrict the results to titles for which you have voted (or not) via the "Rated by you" section. I have a whole complicated chain of bookmarked queries which sometimes involve up to 20 lists being included/excluded and multiple other filters. It is very powerful. For more information, see https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/discover-watch/using-the-advanced-search-feature/GLUEUYWPQNPTEVPU Hope this helps.

@ Col_Needham and bderoes Thanks, but I'm afraid I didn't quite understand it. Basically, I want to compare two lists (see links) and I want to know which movies are present in both of the lists. The reason why, is because there are still a couple of titles that I need to add to the ''Still Need To Watch 2025-2027'' list. So how to achieve this goal? As you can see, there are 1022 items in the ''Favorite Movies 1968-2024'' list and the ''Still Need To Watch 2025-2027'' list has got 456 items. I have already watched 520 movies, which means I still need to watch 502 movies. In other words, I still need to add 46 movies (502 - 456) to the ''Still Need To Watch 2025-2027'' list, but how to know which ones, know what I mean? That's why I want to compare them. https://www.imdb.com/list/ls046424878/?sort=list_order%2Casc&view=grid https://www.imdb.com/list/ls597730119/?ref_=uspf_ttl_1&view=grid

@Navin2000 please see the second paragraph above: "You can also compare two lists and see which titles are in both lists by entering the titles of both lists in the "Include" section -- enter one list name and select it and then pick the next list from the menu and select that." Specifically for your two example lists: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls046424878,ls597730119 Hope this helps.

Note that you can also compare lists that are not your own. Create a comparison with your own lists, then modify the Search to replace your list(s) with those of another. For instance, begin with https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=watchlist,checkins and edit to https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=watchlist,ls095267971 where "ls095267971" came from the url of that list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls095267971/

@Col_Needham Thanks, but either I don't understand you, or you don't understand me. When I clicked on that link, I simply get to see the 456 titles from the ''Still Need To Watch 2025-2027'' list. I mean, I already know that the 456 titles are in BOTH lists. I don't think that this current comparison system is capable of solving my problem. I guess what I need is an easy ''one click'' system that allows me to select movies that I still need to watch, which means I would have to make the list all over again. Now that I think of it, I guess I could use the ''edit list'' function and then copy all of the selected movies to a new list.

@Navin2000 The instructions in our first reply contain all the information you need here. There are 1,022 titles in “Favourite Movies 1968-2024” — https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls046424878 There are 456 titles in “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” — https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls597730119 All 456 titles in “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” are in “Favourite Movies 1968-2024” — https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls046424878,ls597730119 There are 566 titles in “Favourite movies 1968-2024”which are not in “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” — https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls046424878,!ls597730119 There are 0 titles in “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” which are not in “Favourite movies 1968-2024” — https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls597730119,!ls046424878 These are all the comparisons you can do with two lists — the titles in both lists / the titles in the first list but not the second / the titles in the second list but not the first Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham Yes, I see what you mean. Thanks for the help, but I guess what I want to achieve is not possible with this comparison system, I was probably not thinking logically, my bad. The thing is, I have also made a list of movies that I have already seen (in my text editor, so not a list on IMDB) and I'm trying to figure out which movies I still need to add to the “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” list. But that simply isn't possible by comparing these two lists that I made on IMDB. So I have no choice but the manually scan my ''Favorite Movies 1968-2024'' list again. But I now see what you mean, instead of scanning all 1022 titles, I can simply scan the 566 titles. And I can put the missing titles in in my watchlist, and then export them to the “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” list. Thanks a lot for the help, and sorry for being a bit slow. Perhaps I can blame it on the heat of the last few days LOL.

@Col_Needham I spoke a bit too soon, I now remember my problem again. About the 566 titles, can I compare them with the 456 titles? Because this would mean that I wouldn't need to manually scan the 566 titles again.

Please see above … of the 566 titles in https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls046424878,!ls597730119 none of them are in your “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” list. If you want to know how many of those 566 are also not in your IMDb watchlist, you need to add that to the “Exclude” section of the form via https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?lists=ls046424878,!ls597730119,!watchlist — you did not mention this previously. Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham Thanks, I can understand it was a bit confusing to figure out what I meant. But for the moment I think I'm on the right track. So basically I will manually scan the 566 movies, and if all goes well, I should select 46 (1022 minus 520 minus 456) movies (will add them to my watchlist) and those will be the 46 movies that I need to export to the “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” list. Like I said, I already watched 520 movies. So what I gained with this comparison system, is that instead of having to scan 1022 titles, I only have to scan 566 titles, and the 46 movies that I select should NOT already be in the “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” list. So this comparison was helpful after all, thanks again for all of the help.

@Col_Needham By the way, these are the 8 movies that I have already identified, so 39 movies to go, I will continue tomorrow. I have temporarily made my watchlist public. https://www.imdb.com/user/ur100619431/watchlist/?sort=list_order%2Casc&view=grid

@Col_Needham Just to give a quick update: I was able to identify 39 movies (instead of 47 movies) that needed to be added to the “Still Need to Watch 2025-2027” list. Which means that the list now has 495 titles, and that apparantly I already watched 527 movies of my favorite movies list, instead of 520 titles, that I mentioned. And by the way, I always wondered if by mistake I added the same movies to multiple of my lists, but I saw with the comparison system, that it couldn't find any duplicate entries, pretty cool!

@Col_Needham By the way, I now see a ''watched'' button with a picture of an eye, what is this all about? It would be nice if you clicked on this, that the movie (or tv show/series) would be added to an ''already watched'' list, it would have saved me a lot of time.

Hi Navin2000, Clicking the "Watched" button does save the title to a list, called "Your watch history". Please see our FAQ for more details: https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/new-features-updates/mark-as-watched-faq/GR2SD7Y4LZVNHUVH# Cheers!

@Ozzy I'm sorry but I don't get it, I get to see a huge list of all movies that I have not actually watched, but simply visited on IMDB? And I have also never clicked on this ''watched'' button, so these movies are automatically added to this list AFAIK.

Hi Navin2000, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a list of titles you've not watched, but visited. Please could you elaborate further? As for never having clicked on the "Watched" button, this is explained in the FAQ: - What counts as a Watched action? -- Anytime you mark a movie or TV show as Watched, add a Rating, Review, or Check-in. So any title you've added a rating to, reviewed, or checked-in will have been automatically marked as "Watched". I hope this helps!

@Ozzy I think you have already explained it. So basically even when you don't mark the movie as watched, it still ends up on this list. I would rather only see movies on this list, when you actually mark the movie/serie/tv show as watched. The titles that I see on the list are all rated by me, so it's the exact same as my ratings list. But I haven't actually watched all of these movies. At least not fully or recently.
