INTRODUCING: Updated IMDb.com homepage experience

The new homepage is designed to help IMDb customers find what to watch right now, tonight, or this weekend — and where to find the best movies and TV shows for them, whether in theaters, on TV, or across a variety of streaming services (including IMDb TV, Prime Video, HBO, Starz, Showtime, Acorn TV, and PBS). Customers will benefit from a new recommendation engine that leverages implicit and explicit behavior to offer relevant and timely suggestions.

This it the third damn thread I was pointed to since "discussing" the abominable side-scrolling nightmare IMDb calls a homepage. They think I'll get tired of posting, but they don't know me too well because i don't give up on things I am passionate about.

This "improved" homepage is an eyesore to anyone who has taste. IMDb use to be a reader's site and now they are turning it into a viewer's site. If I want to watch video, I'll go to YouTube, because that is a viewer's site. IMDb is a database of written information, mixed with a few visuals, such as poster art and photos, but now IMDb seems to be going the way of YouTube, covering the top third of the page with huge ads (many of them belonging to parent company Amazon, who doesn't want you to forget that they own IMDb) and hoping we will click on an image to view a video. That's is not IMDb's mission and it never should be. It is a database with a wealth of "written" data, that literate people can read, enjoy and maybe learn a thing or two. Anyone with sense knows that if IMDb is going to change their homepage to the side-scrolling piece-of-crap it is today, that it is only a matter of time before the rest of the site follows the same pattern. Anyone who knows web design (such as myself) will realize you don't do a major overhaul of your homepage without changing the rest of the website eventually.

This makes me extremely sad, because I was a member of IMDb since the mid-'90s. I say "was" because I can no longer look at the homepage without feeling disgust and extreme sadness. If this is "progress", please count me out!

Fred Adelman

We are being silenced with them combining multiple threads, directing us to this one, and closing the rest. With fewer threads being complaints about the new homepage, they can get away telling their shareholders or Amazon that, "No, we didn't receive much flak about the new homepage. There were only two threads about it."

Well, truth be told, their actions are completely reasonable.
For many years now I'm moderating a major website with active users who post stuff, not film related website though, but still a website, so I guess I can be a small voice of reason here.
I would do the same with multiple threads explaining one problem, combine them, so all further communication on one subject could be found and read through in one place.
It's not that much out of line really.

It would be nice if someone at IMDb would address the problem. By keeping archiving the threads, it shows me that they are aware of our hate for the new homepage, which is why they keep archiving the threads quicker than normal. To me, that is out of line.

The logical step would be to merge them so that all those comments could be seen here. It's been days and still I haven't found a single happy person.

What a disaster... And not even a light skin. I hate dark UI's.

And of course that they had archived this topic: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/what-happened-to-the-home-page
Every reply was putting this over the official one about the matter. IMDb are trying to hide criticism about the worst thing they ever did. It shows a lack of character, besides lack of taste.

I've put the wrong link. The topic I was talking about is this: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/imdb-com-home-page

It's apparent parent company Amazon is running the show, trying to turn IMDb into a movie store. IMDb employees are scared of disagreeing with Amazon, fearing for their jobs. Hey, I'm a loyal Amazon customer (have been for many years), but even I can see what they are trying to do here. It won't work and the only thing that can happen is IMDb will fail and Amazon won't care, because they are the Disney of the Internet. They won't care about the million of users who use (or use to use) IMDb every day. It will be a tax write-off to them. That's my fear. We all lose and Amazon won't care.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled IMDB Staff Not Taking Responsibility.

I am thoroughly disappointed in the lack of responses from IMDb staff to the criticism over the new homepage and how they're handling our responses, especially merging our threads into one and then locking it. Most of the criticism has been well-mannered and doesn't attack them. Why haven't we received any response from the staff explaining their reasoning of the redesign? Being uncommunicative in this matter expresses the how little care the IMDb staff shows for its members, and especially its long-time members. We are the ones who regularly view your website, click around, and view the ads, generating your revenue. Show us some respect, respond to our outcries, and tell us what's going on.

Amazon is probably telling IMDb staff to ignore us, hoping we will go away. It doesn't help that they keep archiving our threads, making it harder for anyone with a gripe to post. It's likely this horrible homepage is here to stay, but that is not going to stop me from telling people about how non-functional it is (I put a paragraph about it on my own website's homepage, but since the URL address to these threads keeps changing, I had to delete that part). I'll keep posting here until we get a proper response from IMDb, telling us that they are looking into the matter, just like they do with most other problems. Their silence is deafening!

Are you serious with the new homepage? April Fools is not for another 3 months! Was the new homepage designed by 90 year olds with cataracts? Why is everything so friggin' huge, yet so low resolution and with so much empty wasted space? Again... who thought this was a good idea? It looks bad enough and lacks any information on the phone already... but it's even worse on the desktop (you know people still use computers for work and other stuff, not just their phones, right?)

Let me show you this screenshot and ask you yet again: are... you... serious?!

Well, I suppose I'm glad that I rarely visit the homepage anyway.

But many of us do (or did), to read the latest news, polls or other written information. The fact that it has turned into a side-scrolling Netflix wannabe is the reason all of us are on here!

Whoever came up with the new design is an idiot. They made it almost impossible for me to use the site now. Why does IMBD always make the site worse and never better? As it is I use the site about 1/10th I did since they got rid of the message board, the best part of the site. Now it is so hard to navigate it is not worth even visiting.

The new IMDb homepage is the worst thing in the long history of things.

New homepage appalling. It's ugly, I don't want to use it. How is this an improvement? They f*cked up Box Office Mojo the same way. Meddling fools!

Considering that you guys will probably stay with the new design(wrote about it in other thread...not liking it, like most of the people here), can we at least get fixed top-bar ?

That shouldn't be so hard and doesn't affect responsiveness with different kind of resolutions.
In that way at least I don't need to scroll up every time I need to search for something or open the dropdown menu.

Thanks!

The design needs a lot of retooling. But I just don't know how it can be improved on.

I'm afraid a lot of kids will probably like this ugly and rather meaningless new homepage...
As other people have said, I'll just try and stay away from it.

For the past few days, I've been wondering if they reverted to the old design or if they made any changes for the better, but I stop myself before checking it out because I don't want that horrid homepage to get any of my clicks and views.

How is this considered acceptable? The zoom is set to 100% on my browser and nothing is even visible on the home page without scrolling down. If you want a netflix page then have one but give the option to go back to a classic home page that actually functions.

The top banner is not visible because you're using an ad blocker.

I use an ad blocker too, and thank god. The ad/banner they put there is blinding.

Even with ad block off all I would see over the entire screen would be an ad. Great.

IMDB has just announced to the world, with it's videocentric, mobile-oriented redesign, that it is aggressively pursuing its new role in the realm of entertainment: Amazon Prime's B**ch.
