INTRODUCING: Interests

 INTRODUCING: Interests

We are excited to announce the global launch of “Interests” across the IMDb mobile iOS and Android apps, providing entertainment fans a new way to explore their passions and personalize their IMDb experience. Over the next week we will be gradually introducing iOS Interests for app version 14.2 and Android Interests for app version 8.9.3.

Interests is a single hub dedicated to a genre or subgenre to explore popular and highly rated series and movies. Using Interests you can discover the most anticipated releases, popular favorites, and watch new trailers, interviews and IMDb Original Videos.

For more information about “Interests”, please review our Help Guide.

Otherwise, to get started, tap on the Search tab in the IMDb App, scroll down to the “Popular interests” section and tap on the “Browse all interests” link. Currently you can add up to 50 Interests, but the ability to add more Interests will be available soon.

Thanks as always for all your feedback – please feel free to post your questions and comments to this thread.

Hi all,

For information on how to add or remove Interests to/from titles, please see our new Idea thread, where you can also suggest new Interests for IMDb staff to review and determine what Interests to add next.

Please only add one suggestion per comment on the new thread.

Thanks!

I really like this feature and ran into my 50 limit pretty quickly, so it's good to hear it's being upped at some point.

Can we suggest more? The ones that spring to mind are:

Horror Comedy*

Fantasy Comedy

Sc-fi Comedy

Superhero Comedy

Western Comedy

* or Comedy Horror but your naming system seems to put Comedy first

Hi @mightyemperor -

Yes, we absolutely plan to extend the Interest limit.

For the suggestions you mentioned, currently Interests are individually curated by our editors and internal algorithms. We are continuously working on ways to improve and expand our current selections, so stay tuned for future updates on adding new Interests to the site!

This looks great, and has been a long-awaited essential feature.  I was directed here from the 14 year-old thread Implementation of new genres, which I’ve been following since the old forum.  I’m curious what the reasons are why you didn’t just use the standard term “subgenres”, rather than “interests” though.

@shape5 Thanks for the question.  We are using “Interests” because they currently cover both genres and sub-genres, plus some of IMDb’s existing genres are not precisely genres in any case. Finally we have some thoughts of expanding Interests further to include things beyond both genres/subgenres.

How do i revert to the previous UI for the "Browse by Genre" page?

This new UI is just horrible, there's no more option to show all genres the way it used to be, which was by far more convenient than the new looks, it's now just terrible, sorry to say...

Greets,

F.T.

@Tubbs This feature is gradually being launched to customers, but once you have it, there is no option to revert back to the old design, sorry.  The page does still list all genres though, both as part of the most relevant row of interests or the classic genres are shown at the bottom of the main interests page after “Western” in the section entitled “Genre lists”

You can also search by genre (and much more) via advanced title search at https://www.imdb.com/search/title/ and further help is available at https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/discover-watch/using-the-advanced-search-feature/GLUEUYWPQNPTEVPU

Hope this helps.

Well done IMDb.

Loving this new feature:

Looking forward to these being integrated in advanced title search as well

Of course, my day is not over until I make one complaint:

While both are colloquial terms, whodunit (with 1 n) is much, much more widely used than whodunnit (with 2 ns)

Additionally, the former form is especially widely used in the U.S. and IMDb generally defers to U.S.  conventions in these matters.

@NYVKE Thank you.  This feature is being added to the site following a successful launch on apps last year.  We have not yet done as separate announcement as it is only visible to some customers at the moment.

When I was going through choosing the genres I was interested in, I didn't even get through a quarter of the list! I barely got into comedy and I was already at my limits! The limit either needs to be raised substantially, or removed altogether!

Hello @OriginalEW, I am a Product Manager at IMDb. We are actively working on a solution to enable customers to add more than 50 interests.
