IMDb Pages Now Available in Your Preferred Language!

IMDb Pages Now Available in Your Preferred Language!

English | Français | Deutsch | हिंदी | Italiano | Português | Español

We're thrilled to announce a new feature that will make IMDb more enjoyable for our global audience!

What's New?

We've introduced machine translations for IMDb pages, allowing you to experience more content in your preferred language. This enhancement means that additional sections of IMDb pages will gradually become available in the language you've selected.

This feature currently supports the following languages:

  • French (Canada)

  • French (France)

  • German

  • Hindi

  • Italian

  • Portuguese (Brazil)

  • Spanish (Mexico)

  • Spanish (Spain)

Some of the information you that you see in your preferred language may rely on machine translations. These will be prefaced with this symbol:

How It Works

Once you've set your preferred language in your account settings, you'll begin to see more IMDb content displayed in that language. We're rolling this out gradually, so you'll notice more machine translations appearing over time.

Whether you're browsing movie details, reading plot summaries, or exploring celebrity pages, you'll now have a richer experience in the language that's most comfortable for you.

You can find more information on our Help guide.

As with any new feature, we're eager to hear your thoughts! Please share your experience with the translation feature on this thread and let us know how we can continue to improve your IMDb experience.

Hi ! I have sent a message to the IMDb "Feedback" mail address and eventually got neither a real answer, nor a hope for some solutions, but rather what appears to be a robotic automated mail. It suggested that I should submit my query to this board. So thanks in advance for any observations, comments or feedback from community users ! Here is the mail I sent yesterday : "Hi, I am a french user and I just want to let you know that the french translations of the trivia items are totally incorrect and unreadable. Obviously they are made by an AI system, and they are full of grammar mistakes, syntax errors and spelling faults that turn each sentence into a beyond understanding gibberish. This is a recent issue, for I have been an IMDb user for 26 years, and I never saw any of these catastrophic problems before this year.I hope IMDb won't go on making fun of itself with these laughable (?) translations which are really unreliable and untrustworthy. And above all, discreditable for this awesome website. Sorry to be a bit harsh, but I am shocked. With my deepest regards" Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation Link : https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/trivia-french-translations/69dcad3ef456cd179ebd2129 Title : Trivia french translations

Hi @Jump,

Thanks for writing in, and for 26 years with IMDb.

We recently rolled out machine translations on IMDb pages, including Trivia. When content is machine translated, a small icon appears with the text. Are you seeing a translation icon on the trivia items you mentioned? That will help us confirm it's a machine translation issue.

Could you also share a couple of examples of where you noticed the problem? We'll pass your feedback along to the team.

If the content is machine translated, you can turn off "Show machine translated content where available" in your account settings. That will disable the machine translation feature.

We appreciate you flagging this.

Thank you so much for your quick answer. As you requested, you may find some examples at the end of this message.

I was not aware of the disabling feature in my account settings, I think I shall use it from now. I can read easily in english, and also my eyes won't be stung again...Haha ;-P Have a nice day!

For some time now, plot outlines and plot summaries (if they don't already exist) have been automatically translated from English into other languages, in my case, German. I've almost never found such a translation that isn't flawed. Let's take the article I just accessed as an example: https://www.imdb.com/de/title/tt38840807 The plot outline displayed is: "Der Highschooler Hibiki wird in ein gefährliches Fantasy-Reich entführt, das nur über grundlegende Fähigkeiten wie „Bewertung“ verfügt. Verloren im Grasland und in machtlosen, unerwarteten Begegnungen bringen Fähigkeiten zum Vorschein, die seinen Überlebenskampf in eine epische R..." (sic!) The original text reads: "High schooler Hibiki is transported to a dangerous fantasy realm armed with only basic skills like 'Appraisal.'" Lost in grasslands and powerless, unexpected encounters reveal abilities that turn his survival struggle into an epic journey. And the first thing we notice is that the translation cuts off mid-sentence. German often uses longer words than English, and there simply isn't enough space. But what's the point of cutting a text off mid-sentence? The correct translation would then be something like: "Der Oberschüler Hibiki wird in eine gefährliche Fantasiewelt transportiert und verfügt nur über grundlegende Fähigkeiten wie „Einschätzung“. Verloren in Graslandschaften und machtlos, offenbaren unerwartete Begegnungen Fähigkeiten, die seinen Überlebenskampf in eine epische Reise verwandeln." Clear differences, right? The previous translation wasn't just factually incorrect, but downright distorted the meaning in some places. Suddenly, it wasn't the high school student, but the world he was transported to that possessed the powers. Absurd nonsense. Another example: https://www.imdb.com/de/title/tt41090249 Original text in English: "High schooler Yeo Eui-ju secretly writes web novels by night. When four charming new teachers arrive, they inspire her stories and shake up her school. A witty romance about teenage dreams, clumsy moments, and coming-of-age." This becomes in German: "Der Gymnasiast Yeo Eui-ju schreibt nachts heimlich Webromane. Als vier bezaubernde neue Lehrer hinzukommen, inspirieren sie sie zu Geschichten und bringen ihre Schule auf den Kopf. Eine witzige Romanze über Teenagerträume, ungeschickte Momente und das Erwachsenwerden." And here we come to something "fascinating." For whatever reason, the automated IMDb translation changes the gender, which is so important in the German language. The female high school student "Gymnasiastin" has suddenly become a male "Gymnasiast." There are further inaccuracies in the translation ("awkward moments" don't exist, moments can't be "awkward," and the new teachers are certainly not "bezaubernd" but "charming"). A more accurate translation would be: "Die Oberschülerin Yeo Eui-ju schreibt nachts heimlich Webromane. Als vier charmante neue Lehrer an die Schule kommen, inspirieren sie sie zu neuen Geschichten und bringen ihren Schulalltag ganz schön durcheinander. Eine witzige Liebesgeschichte über Teenagerträume, peinliche Momente und das Erwachsenwerden." And here again, we notice that German texts tend to be a bit longer. This wouldn't work with the character limit, even if you cut some of the filler words, which would then make the text seem less polished. And a third example: https://www.imdb.com/de/title/tt39335776 According to the display, this isn't an automatically translated text, but it's still clearly been translated automatically. Original: "A guilty goddess slayer faces endless punishment, forced to fight waves of foes forever." In German: "Eine schuldige Göttinnenmörderin wird endlos bestraft und muss für immer gegen Wellen von Feinden kämpfen." Here we have the problem that translating a text into a medium that is obviously unfamiliar can go wrong. You can translate it this way purely linguistically. But here we come back to the problem of linguistic gender (and even more so, the real gender of the character). Because it is a "Goddess Killer." A man killed the goddess, not the goddess herself. The entire meaning of the statement is distorted, not to say completely twisted. And I'm not even getting started on the fact that this isn't even the correct description of the episode, but rather a description of the series itself. I could go on and on because it affects practically every translation. It's a total disaster. So, here's my plea: IMDb, please disable these terrible translations. It's unbearable and not even remotely helpful. No reader benefits from these inaccurate descriptions. It's good that you offer the option of German (and other language) descriptions, but you'd be better off waiting for people who actually know what they're doing to create them, instead of offering this automated nonsense. Which brings us to the next problem: whenever I try to correct errors in German texts or submit summaries in German, they're rejected for flimsy reasons in at least 50 percent of cases. IMDb apparently has more faith in its incredibly flawed AI than in its contributors. So, here's my plea: IMDb, please disable these terrible translations.

Or, at the very least, provide the option to switch between the original text and the translation, as is currently available on the quote pages. It would be highly desirable to extend this functionality to reviews, goofs, trivia, etc.

Hi @MarcusCyron,

Thanks for the detailed examples and side-by-side comparisons. We'll share these with the team working on the machine translated experience. If you'd rather browse IMDb without machine translations, you can go to your account settings and switch off "Show machine translated content where available". We'll also pass along your feedback about the contribution experience for content in German.

Hi @ljdoncel,

Thanks for the suggestion to extend the 'See original / Translate' toggle in the Quotes subpage to other content types. We'll pass that along to the team.
