IMDb Movie Roulette!

The idea, is that there should be a "roulette"-option in the watchlist that chooses one movie at random from your favorites that would help you choose tonights movie for you! Like my watchlist, I have so many films I have never seen, and I often cannot decide one movie from all of these. Therefore I would like IMDB to choose the film FOR me. You could call it "roulette", "movie-roulette", "movie of the day", "choose movie" or something - though something with "roulette" would be a great name for it! The same idea could also be implemented in the imdb top 250 movies, or maybe movies based on your taste.I think this would be a VERY popular option!!

This is an interesting idea, although I personally would probably not use the feature. A general implementation of this would apply to all title lists, including the IMDb Top 250 and IMDb Top 1000.

IMDb has had a something similar for a long time. There used to be a link to this feature on the IMDb home page. It is still available on the Site Index [http://www.imdb.com/a2z ]

Funny that something similar have existed, but this idea, a movie-chooser from your own personal watchlist would be a whole other thing! :-D You're left with all these great movies you really want to see, but you're stuck between choosing!! This feature would really be the solution for this, and I hope many of the users on IMDB agrees! :-)

Was looking for something similar myself. So I hacked a simple script, you can try it out here: http://random.moviehint.net

Maybe it will help you as well :)

Hi, cool! :-)

Doesn't seem to work for me though. I have set my watchlist to public, but still get errors like "Not Found -The requested URL /<title>404 Error</title> was not found on this server."

I pasted my AuthorID which is 'ur25035606'.

Thanks!

Okay, it should work now :) I think you may have tried it before changing your watchlist to public. I'll add an additional check at a later time, I've added a check, to prevent this from happening in the future.

No, I tried after changing - even relaunched my browser - but anyhow, it's working perfectly now! Thank you so much for this, big help! :-D

I'm affraid something has changed at IMDB's side, downloading a public list does not seem to work anymore when not logged in. My own list is not working anymore either :-( I'll take a look at it some time this week and place an update here.

Ahhhh, are you using the download as CSV link?

If so, then see Giancarlo Cairella's statement here:

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/cant_export_the_watchlist_as_csv_without_being_logged_in

Yep.. ah thank you for the confirmation. I hope they will revert this sudden change, as many automated tools work with the CSV. It's much more suitable for synchronizing a persons watchlist, than the RSS that only reports additions and is limited in length.

Sorry for the late reply. If you give me your author-id, I can help you out.

Please note that since early this week, the RSS-feed from IMDB seems to be broken (is returning a webpage instead). I'm waiting for a fix from IMDB, but am also working on a plan B.

I'd love to see this implemented, really. I struggle so hard to choose films nowadays and what with my Watchlist at 1200+ I need IMDb to at least give me the option to pick a title for me!

Doesn't really work all that great. I've 2200 movies in my watchlist and it's only selecting from what seem to be the last 50 or maybe smaller sample I've added most recently. I've now gotten the same movie 3 times in the last 10 picks.

Thanks for your feedback Grobar. You're right, I overlooked something and only last 100 entry's are used. I'll fix it as soon as possible :)

Seconding Grobar, I thought it was a bug with my list at first! But I also get the same films multiple times and he's definitely right about only pulling the last 100 or so.

The problem should be fixed now. Thanks for your feedback Grobar and Dominic!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled idea for the site: add a button to randomly pick a movie from your watch list.

idea for the site: add a button to randomly pick a movie from your watch list, with the idea to watch that movie that day.(only released movie in ones own country ofcourse)

I'd personally much rather have a *randomize* or *shuffle* button on Title Lists that would shuffle the whole list than just a button that picks one movie at random.  If you just want the random movie, it'll appear at the top of the shuffled list!  :)
I just noticed that this idea/page is from 3 years ago and it only has 10 votes (mine made 11)?  Stinks... I've been looking for a way to shuffle or randomize my IMDb lists for years now, and it appears, unfortunately, that there isn't one.
