IMDb message boards

Please see the text below from http://www.imdb.com/board/announcement

In addition, we have created a new Get Satisfaction categories for "I Need to Know" to replace the "I Need to Know" message board and "IMDb Poll" to replace the "IMDb Poll" message board. A post on the Contributors Help board explains the migration path from there to the newly renamed Get Satisfaction category "Data Issues & Policy Discussions"  (which is an already active community here).

An FAQ on the closure is now available at http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?boardsclosurefaq

IMDb Message Boards Announcement

IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

IMDB could have easily salvaged the message boards by making them a pay-for service. Trolls aren't going to spend the money or time to create several accounts and use them for nefarious purposes and those of us who truly enjoyed discussing films and not harassing other users would gladly have paid a nominal fee if that had been presented to us as an option. My hope is that, in time, IMDB will reconsider relaunching the message boards and consider making them accessible only by subscription.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled People leaving IMDb due to missing message boards, will IMDb stay for a long time....

Dear anyone from the IMDb staff. I'm in desperate need to know about something.

First, the problem: In relation to the removal of the message boards, I've heard many people got angry for the decision and decided to leave the the whole site out of anger. Many IMDb members used the site mainly to read on the messages people had written for every movies they've watched. Several of the former members have already started their memberships on other sites, such as The Movie DB.

Second: While people were quitting their membership, someone on a forum site believed the IMDb might have to shut down the whole website due to losing money and stuff, and there would be "no more IMDb". This is where I'm coming in, in desperate need to know...

Ever since the 2000s, I've been a faithful user of this site. This is the site where I get the most information I can find in most of the movies and series that ever exist in the whole planet. I love this site very much, I use it almost every day to look at new and old titles, and I will stay at this site as a faithful member as long as I can, despite the message boards being gone. I mostly use this site to give star ratings on movies I've watched, read detailed information about any existing movies, and contribute by adding small details on already existing titles and adding new titles. Besides, film, music and video games have been my main interrests since I was a little child.

And I don't want the IMDb to close for good, just because people leave the site and you lose money, otherwise I might go insane like a monkey confined to a tiny cage. :-(

And so I want to ask you a question out of curiosity, but will the IMDb get a new type of forum- or message boards? And what new features are you gonna launch this year? Whatever new features are to be launched, I wish several former users could come back and use this site. The IMDb have done great as the world's biggest movie database on the internet since 1990, and I really hope it continues to stay and grow as many years as possible.

Anyway, any helpful answer will be appreciated.

Sincerely, chribren, your faithful user. <3 :-)

Hello again, thanks for mergin my comment to this topic, and thanks for your answer. I guess I haven't described the "people leaving IMDb out of anger" part good enough. However, I wrote this yesterday evening, because I was worried about if an amount of people would quit their membership, and IMDb would have to close their site, depending on how many users would have "left the building".

By the way, here's just an example of anyone who originally planned to quit IMDb, a quote of what user write2topcat wrote on forum site Reddit.
"I am disgusted with that website for doing this. I will use themoviedb.com now and quit IMDB after Feb 20".
It appears like some tens of people were simply exaggerating about the removal of message boards.

Here's the link where I found the quote: https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/5rwaqt/any_alternative_to_imdb_discussion_boards_now/.

"1,320,000 Members registered since Mon Feb 20 2017". Thanks, this was one of the answers I needed the most. Seems like the IMDb will be doing fine, so I suppose I don't have to worry about it anymore, and use the site like I've always done. :-)

Again, sincerely IMDb's faithful user chribren. ;-)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled WHY did you get rid of discussion?.

This is actually a statement for IMDb, since this is the only way to talk to them anymore. Your website used to be up on my computer pretty much 24/7. When watching a movie, I really enjoy reading the trivia and enjoyed the discussions. Especially for the older movies, it was great to read explanations for parts I didn't 'get' or to be able to respond when someone didn't understand why they had to pull the lever (choke) to start a car. Many times people involved in the production made comments, or researchers, or even members of a family (or friends of) that a movie was based upon (Cheaper by the Dozen). With that gone, I don't even necessarily check IMDb daily. Which means that ad revenues are down based upon my use. Great move. If anyone knows of another site that fills the bill, please let me know.

It's been over a month now, and I feel isolated and dumbed down without the message boards. I used to visit each time I watched a movie or tv show, and I always walked away feeling enlightened. It's frustrating not to have that wealth of knowledge. Not to have a place to go to discuss film and television with people from around the world. Sure, there were trolls, but not enough to dissuade me from visiting. Still, I instinctively pick up my phone/computer while watching something, only to remember that IMDB is now useless. Pity.

I have been posting on a few of the copycat boards that have popped up, but none of them are terribly active, yet. Please join the discussions over at hashed.io and moviechat.org, and let me know of any other places to discuss film/tv. The TCM message board is a great place as well, but it does not have boards for individual films. Perhaps, we can work on getting them to expand.

I miss the message boards.  I used to always look forward to coming to this site after watching a movie to see messages about what others thought of it and to better understand the movie.  Whether to critique it, compliment an actor, or even ask what song it was that was in a movie there was always someone else with the answer or the same questions.  Sure, there were also trolls but hey, that's the Internet.  It's a shame that IMDB took the nuclear approach towards dealing with a few toxic people. Its fans were much better off dealing with a few trolls than not having the resource at all.

It's truly a shame that the message boards have been deleted. There is really no reason for me to visit IMDB anymore. All basic movie info is available on plenty of other sites now. The message boards offered in depth discussion on films and now the site is purely superficial. I predict this is the beginning of the end for IMDB unless the change their policy quick. Until then, I won't be returning. This decision cost you a 10+ year user. I hope whatever management person made this decision, is ok with the fallout.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I would just like to tell my favorite movis(dead or alive) how much I appreciate ....

Why can't fans add to a star's website chatting about what they like or their films. After seeing one of my favorite movies I want to get onto IMDB and tell them how much they mean to me. Fans should decide their rating not box office receipts I'm sure Greta  Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford would beat most modern stars. This is an important issue to educate a new generation into film stars that really were STARS not celebrities. Hollywood is 'dying' because they've forgotten what made it great, the glamor ,the glitz, the mystery. I want to see my  stars as beacons, as gods on the screen  their daily lives a fantasy world of perfection. No divorces, no scandals unless they're betrayed their fans. OK this is 2017 but we are talking HOLLYWOOD -THE FANTASY FACTORY. I yearn for that to lift us up and forget our humdrum lives, I hate the National Enquirer(unless it's someone who isn't pulling their weight)Please set up a fan website to decide who's in and who's out and who we want to see or who don't care about or are past it.

Please bring back discussion message boards!! I have noticed that all message boards have been removed from film, actors, etc.. webpages. This was one of my favorite features of imdb as it allowed for users to discuss and post questions, get answers, and reflect interactively among other users of the site about films, tv shows, actors. I have also read IMDB's  explanation for the removal of message boards and I can not agree with or be satisfied with the explanation given.  I am very sad to see that such a valuable and important feature of your website has been removed and I am sure I am not the only person who feels this way. Please bring back discussion message boards!!
