IMDb Advanced Search Redesign

IMDb Advanced Search Redesign

We are excited to announce IMDb’s Advanced Search redesign! Customers are now able to leverage all three sub-searches (Name, Title, Collaborations) on a single search page, making it easier to update search queries and navigate to desired results. The refreshed search is meant to enhance the IMDb experience for all customers worldwide, improving the discovery and navigation with easier access to celebrity, movie, and TV content on any device. The updated experience reflects feedback and suggestions from customers as well as in-depth research.

For more information about the redesign you can review our FAQ, and for more information on how to use the new Advanced Search feature you can find details on our Help Guide.

We hope you enjoy this latest improvement, and thank you for continuing to make IMDb the world's most trusted source for movie, TV, and entertainment content.

I used to be able to go from a name page to 'collaborations' and the name of person of that page would auto-populate in the first box leaving me only to enter the second name, if doing a collaboration search. Now I have to enter both names and, worse still, if I am entering a common name and that particular person does not come up, I cannot do the collaboration search. Try David Harris (II) the special effects technician. It is not possible to get his name to come up.

@jamesmmm Thanks for the problem report, which we have flagged for the team.  In the meantime, to perform a David Harris (II) colaboration search, enter the text:

nm0364594

into the collaborations search form and it will populate with his name (from the URL of his name page).

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham This is working now for David Harris (II). It is an improvement from before as you can see some information about the person you have the option of selecting. It was pot luck before. It would be even better if, having selected one person, you could then open their IMDb page for assurance in the same way that you can when adding credits to a title as a contributor.

Why the F do company pages now redirect straight to this awful new search page?

A company page is not a search page!

@jean_morel Thanks for the feedback, however, company pages were replaced with advanced title search (ATS) results six years ago in 2017, so this is not a new change, sorry.

The new company search results are actually much more customisable, because previously all you could see were the company credits across all titles.  Thanks to the new ATS, you can now filter the company filmography via full range of attributes (as well as continuing to sort via multiple options too).  For example, previously looking at credits for Warner Bros. at https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?companies=co0002663 you were stuck with a view of some 11,000+ titles, whereas now via the options on the left of the page, you can filter to reach, say, Warner Bros. movies of the 1930s, sorted by number of ratings -> https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&companies=co0002663&release_date=1930-01-01,1939-12-31&sort=num_votes,desc

Hope this helps.

Because outside of IMDbPro, company pages have for a long time merely been search results.

@Col_Needham Thanks for the reply, but this is simply not true.

Yes, company pages were changed to search results six years ago, but these were presented with the Company name right at the top, crucially with its country code.

So in your Warner Bros. example, you would have "Warner Bros. [us]" in big and bold right there at the top. Whereas if you were looking at https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?companies=co0920944 you would have "Warner Bros. [au]". Knowing what country a company is from is essential.

Moreover, once on that page you could click a button that brought you straight to the proper, relevant IMDB Pro company page, an extremely useful feature which has been removed with this alleged "improvement".

Yes, that's definitely one drawback to the information presentation in the new design of IMDb's advanced search: it doesn't clearly indicate the query parameters in the title and subject heading of the HTML output like the information presentation in the design from the last generation platform.

@jean_morel Thanks for the more specific details.  The country code and the link to IMDbPro are a miss in the requirements which we have passed along to the search team.

Can imdb avail us the choice to opt out of the update to the Collaborations search page? It is clearly not as good now. Note that searching for the two names now results in varied nonspecific titles including overall TV series that both people may have appeared in but likely not in the same episode. Previously the results would only include the specific title, including specific TV episodes, where both actors were actual castmates. That was clearly better and I would like to revert to that earlier version. In fact, I can't think of a valid reason to visit the new version the way that it is. I hope you'll change it back or let us choose to opt out of the update, but thanks for your attention.

@bernard_o_neill_20latlac541e4  Thanks for the feedback. There are other customers who prefer matches to include series in the results even if the people did not work directly upon the same episode.   The new advanced search enables each customer choose for themselves.  To restrict the results to exact TV-episodes, simply click the “Title Type” menu on the left and select “TV episodes” (and/or any other title types which you would like to include):

For example -> https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?role=nm1089991,nm0702841&title_type=tv_episode

Hope this helps.

Oh, I see that now. I guess that's workable, just without the shared credits all in one go as it was before. Thanks.

The old version shows the director and the 4 main Cast in the results

why they are removed now? That was very helpful and saves a lot of time.

Previously just by using "find in page" I can search a certain actor/s or director/s I'm looking for. It is time consuming to click on every (i) button to see the cast. It was more helpful in the previous way. I hope you consider that.

Thanks for other improvements though.

The way the new platform works has had a generally-consistent behavioral theme, in that much data is hidden away behind extra clicks that generate extra web traffic. The only thing that differed was the recent change to the "where to watch" menu that appears on title pages. I've complained about this, but I don't think Col wants to move away from this basic pattern that is considered "modern" as if the old way wasn't also modern.

In the old search page I was able to choose results per page 50, 100, 150, 250

This was very helpful for me, I was using 250 a lot, because afterwards I was searching trough this results with normal browser page search.

With the new search page I have to click 5 times in the bottom (show me 50 more results) to get the first 250. It's time consuming.

@de_crecy Thanks for the feedback.  For now, you can achieve this by manually adding &count=250 to the end of the URL of any results. For example -> https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&release_date=2023-01-01,2023-11-16&count=250

I know in the past, the addition of

"&production_status=released"

did exactly what the words say, namely exclude unreleased films in search results. However, I did not find this setting in the search options anymore and also adding the parameter manually does not do the trick here. Anybody knows a way to get it back? The only somewhat workaround I can think of right now is including this very day as the latest release date, but it's not really practical because you have to change it every day.

Didn't that become a hidden parameter at some point? I mean, I remember seeing somebody on here inquire about how the production status parameter had been removed from the Advanced Title Search (ATS) of the last generation platform.

The keywords filter does not seem to work properly, when typing in a keyword that is more than a single word. For example 'music video' the search does not find anything.

This is very concerning considering the keywords that are used most often include more than one word.

This bug has completely disrupted the way I use this platform. As I frequently used the advanced search feature to find media I have not viewed before, using exclusively keyword and genres searches.

@bderoes But we shouldn't have to. In the prior iteration, not putting hyphens worked perfectly. Not to mention the fact that countries like West Germany, East Germany and possibly more are simply not there.

@Peter_pbn Sorry about the miss with this issue on the other thread (and likewise sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime, @Bingmapsfan, @jean_morel and @bderoes).

I am not 100% sure what happened as the team reported that all feedback was being examined and any bugs were being logged. I therefore expect there’s already a work item awaiting the bandwidth to address the problem — there are several fixes still in-flight at the moment, including the company search issue reported above by @jean_morel

As you can imagine, ATS is one of the most complex parts of the site, and even with extensive testing, we missed some of the use cases in the requirements, sorry (and by “we” I also mean “me” as a very heavy user of ATS myself).

Who redesigned this page? It is the worst internet page layout , EVER. Today I'm stopping something I've done for years. Your Born Today page

is no longer worth my time. Maybe, you can shrink the subject matter down a little more, then no one will bother. TRASH!

Sorting titles by "Year" does not work, it shows the first 50 titles and when you click on another 50 there is nothing, regardless of whether you go from the oldest or the newest date, it does not go beyond 50.

So many bugs.

Confirming your bug report, and adding that the same thing doesn't happen when I add &count=250 to the url: only get the first 250.

@bderoes / @plur62  Thanks for the problem report.  The issue here is with the sort order "Year" which I am not sure should even be listed any longer.   I will check with the team, but the "Release Date" sort achieves the same sort and yet does not display the same issue, so we recommend using that as "Year" is likely to be removed.

Made an account just to post this.  Are there any plans to at least make some large changes to the new advanced search? The new search requires an absolutely excessive amount of extra scrolling and clicking compared to the old one. Also, there is no true compact list format available anymore which just makes the scrolling and viewing matters even worse. The layout is not user friendly and navigating anywhere is extremely cumbersome. I cannot even begin to describe how much I miss the old search. I have been using IMDb for over 20 years and this is an absolute nightmare - the new navigation is completely unusable.

@rogerlanders951 There is still a Compact view, but it's not very compact: only 4 titles per screen on a 15.6" laptop (at 100%; 3 titles with 125%). Contrast that with 7 titles on a List Edit (5 at 125%) and 13 titles on a Seen page (10.5 at 125%).

I think in the former Compact search results we had a flag off to the right for adding into Watchlist. I just put 161 titles into Watchlist using the new search, and it was certainly more tedious than before.

(Somewhere on the forum is likely an Idea requesting the ability to bulk-add search results to a list.)

Is there a way to see more than 50 titles at a time when doing a title search?  I did a search with over 3400 results and, to see them all, had to keep clicking "see 50 more."  Also, after clicking on one of the titles and going back to the full list, it went back to just the first 50 titles instead of all the ones I'd added one click at a time.  It would be so much easier if all 3400 results showed up at once and stayed after going to a title page and then returning to the search list.

You can display 250 at a time by adding

&count=250

to the url after selecting your search.

I'd recommend opening links into a new tab/window so you preserve your search results display. Right-click on the link, or middle-click.

I left my phone for about 10 minutes while I went to do something, I was somewhere around 1000 results and when I came back the page refreshed itself and returned to the first 50 results. :D

I just want to add myself to the list of those who liked it better when the director and principal cast members could be shown automatically without having to click the (i) button for every title on the list.

Granted, maybe not everybody cares about that. But IMDb does make three versions of the search results available -- Detailed, Grid, and List. Why not add a fourth option, adding the directors and principal cast to what is available in the Detailed version? You could call that the Very Detailed version or something like that.

I'm missing the option when the clicked element changes color from blue to purple. This was very useful, especially for advanced search. It's a shame that it was also removed in this redesign. It's hard to keep track of which titles we've visited. Recently viewed option has limitations.

122 Messages

 •

3.8K Points

I also miss that option. In my experience, it was easy to find out if I have been on a title, name or whatever, and I can decide to click on the same thing again, or not at least move on to those I hadn't clicked on. Now, thanks to the removal in the redesign, I can't always tell if I have been on that element or not, especially when the advanced search hit many hundreds or thousands, and several movies, people and companies have exactly same name.

I'm sorry to tell, but the recent redesigns are a shame for removing useful elements we have been liking for many years until now, and for making things more cumbersome with more clicks and stuff for us users who've been crying out for simple use of the actual site.

I saw that for the advanced search, there is only the option to select US Certificates. Can this be changed so I can choose any certificate for any country? For example, could I see what movies were rated 15 in South Korea or III in Hong Kong, or even a combination of them (movies rated both 15 in South Korea and III in Hong Kong)? Here is a screenshot to clarify what I am talking about.
