Half stars should be allowed for reviews (7.5, 8.5, etc)

And some that disagree with you. There are already millions to gazillions of votes on IMDb based on the 10-point scale. And 10 different ratings is already enough room for distinction for me. I always wonder when I see a reviewer rating movies on something as grand as a 100-point scale, why bother--and couldn't that energy be spent on less arbitrarily-precise reviewing?

One reason that show worked. A simple up-down vote allowed more time to argue over actual merits of films.

I think the ability to rate half points (f.ex 9.5/10 instead of 9/10 or 10/10) would be really useful since I and many others are more familiar with that rating scale. It would make the overall ratings more accurate for everyone, and people who only rate in whole numbers can still do so. And on Goodreads books are rated on a 1-5 scale. Some users there also ask for half points or an expansion to 10 (effectively the same in that case). Likewise, the problem is brought up that it, in a way, makes all the previous ratings less precise and may make many users feel compelled to rerate everything. Personally, I think 1-10 is plenty! I am prone to overthink my rating as is, trying to weigh personal enjoyment, artistic and cultural merit, historical context, etc.
