I often look at this app on my phone at the video store. Thought it would be a nice feature if I could scan the UPC code to play movie preview or trailer.
To begin, there are far too many UPC codes for a given movie. Remember that each different version - VHS, original DVD, directors cut, Blu-ray, 20th Anniversary version, etc - has a different version.
On the other hand, a pack with 50 titles will only have one UPC code. For example, "Drive In Movie Classics : 50 Movies" has the code 8-26831-07021-6: which of the 50 titles should it select?
Not to mention all other countries in the world, with different releases, all with their own UPC or EAN.
There are other programs/databases online that keep track of different movie releases, but I don't know of any that also provide movie previews and trailers. While I like the idea of what you propose, it would be harder to implement than the benefit of said implementation could possibly defend.
Bar code scans? Whilst shopping at a brick & mortar store, would it not be great to be able to scan a DVD's bar code, then it links to IMDB description, trailers, etc. Would be waaay cool to scan, then add it to your wish list, yes?
