Old movie about a rich collector with a 'menagerie' of unique beings - each of them best in the world in a specific field

I watched this when I was a little child (in the mid-late 80s), but I am sure it is a much older movie (I cannot quantify the time frame though) since I saw it in tv at 'telecinemateca' - which always broadcasted classic/older movies (30s/40s/50s/60s...).

It was about a rich eccentric man who enslave exceptional or special beings - which were kidnapped and force to live in his own type of zoo or menagerie.

I remember inside his collection where characters similar to circus attractions etc.

The only plot I am still remembering is that his last addition was a young football player- best in the world in his area (as the others from his collection). He - of course- once reached his palace is very upset and tried to escape....

I looked for it everywhere without luck, hope someone older or a cine buff can help me.
