Kung Fu Movie Experts Needed.

Please help!!!!

i saw a movie a long time ago about a shaolin monk that was a wanted criminal on the run. a big buff guy with tatoos that had a metal staff. the kind with the flat broom type blade on one end and i think a cresent on the other. along his travels he brutally murders criminals in the most gory and ruthless manner. he would stumble across people in need and reluctantly help them by mercilessly wiping out evildoers in some of the most awesome fight scenes ive seen. for some reason i cant seem to find the movie and i dont remember the title. all the lists of the best kung fu movies are trash and dont have the movie im looking for. in 30 years of watching mostly nothing but foreign action movies the names all start to get hazy and most have other names depending on the original language. i need a younger mind to help me out with this. thanks ahead of time.

The description of reluctantly helping the poor and slaughtering the villains while on the run sounds like some of the samurai film series that I used to watch, Zatoichi, Kyoshrio Nemuri, and The Lone and Cub movies (Shogun Assassin was the U.S. release).  However, none of those characters were monks with tattoos - and they all fought with swords.

Do you remember what decade the film was from?  If it was the 1970s, it could be a film that Chang Cheh or (Jimmy) Wang Yu made.  Both men made pretty violent martial arts movies in the '70s.  If it was from the 1990s, there were also quite a few violent martial arts films in that decade, Assassin, The Blade, Burning Paradise, etc.  It has been a long time since I have seen any of these, so my memory of the plots are very hazy.

Best of luck with your search.

@JRD it was newer then the 90's for sure. I remember him helping a woman that has several orphans under her care. He was distinct in appearance with a rather buff build and was definitely a Shaolin monk that was totally fine with gruesomely murdering bad guys. Lots of blood splatter and such. I've seen the ones you mentioned and remember them. This is another one. It was a well made film imo but not necessarily super high budget. Unfortunately most of the details are fuzzy.
