Help ID'ing This Film...?

I have a very vivid memory of a film I caught being broadcast on some French TV channel while visiting as a young child. I'm hoping this might ring a bell with someone here.

Here are the fragments I retained:

The movie is old - definitely in B&W and focuses on a couple (husband & wife?) who are living in the countryside somewhere in a very large house or castle. An uninvited visitor shows up and overstays his welcome, cause a ton of turmoil between the couple. He may have been a thief or a squatter or something, but in my mind, the visitor in a stranger and creates a ton of tension.

The film ends with the castle / giant home burning down - this is in my mind, the final shot of the movie.

I know that's almost nothing to go on...but maybe it triggers something for you, masters of the internet.

I would love any leads - it's haunted me for most of my life.

Thank you in advance,

Alex

Hi @wolfinthewall

Could this Actor or Actress be one of the couple?

Neither of those actors ring a bell for me. I will check that movie though!

Even back then, it seemed pretty old. It was black-and-white, but if I had to guess, I’d say no more modern than late 1950s maybe? That’s just a rough guess..

Also, the film was English language, even though I saw it in France. I did not clarify that in the original post. I’m sorry I don’t have more specificities. It’s just a super fragmented, distant memory. Almost like a dream puzzle I hope to solve…

Some of those Roger Corman gothic films from the 1960's had stories (usually based on Poe)  where a third person enters a couple's life (sometimes the couple is married; sometimes they are siblings).  These films also usually end with the castle burning at the end.  However, I am pretty sure they are all in color though. For example:

The House of Usher

The Pit and the Pendulum

The Terror

Good luck with your search.

Well, when were you a child?? We're not psychic, you know! Well I am, professionally, but it's $350 for a half hour consultation so I'm not about to whip out my "special gift" for something you should have told us to begin with.

So were you a child in 1940?? That's, like, when Gabin made films!

Or were you a kid in like 1970 and were you watching an old movie and not a contemporary one?

All this is important. Alors!?
