Does anyone know this movie please

Hi I’m trying to find a movie I loved as a child (I was born 1983 so it could’ve been 70s, 80s or 90s I’m afraid) & my memories of it might not be accurate so here goes…

I think it was an Australian TV movie, looked like a man and his child walking along dusty rural roads etc he was I think previously estranged but took over care of the child after the mum either died or became an alcoholic (I think)… the child has a cuddly giraffe teddy,at one point while collecting firewood the child is hit by a vehicle and ends up in hospital, kind of a Paul Hogan type actor (but possibly British, I just think he looked a bit like him) can’t even mind if the child is a boy or girl but they were about 8 years old. Hope this sparks a memory!
