70’s/early 80’s movie about teen boy and girl who run away from home

I saw a movie on TV as a very little kid (around 1985-ish) and I'm still curious about what it was.

It would've been from the 1970's or early 1980's. What I remember is, it was about a boy and a girl living in America’s heartland. They were probably around 16-17 years old. The boy lived with his mean single father who's a truck driver or something. The boy did something to get into trouble (I wish I could remember what), so he and the girl decide to run away together. After they leave, the dad bursts into the boy’s room to chew him out, but finds him gone. Then it becomes like a road movie with the boy and girl on the lam, evading the police and the boy's father. At one point, the boy and girl check into a motel, and the lady at the front desk chastely insists that they get separate rooms.

I don’t remember if it was a TV movie or a theatrical. I feel like it was probably an independent film of some sort, because I remember it feeling kinda lo-fi and character-based. Does any of this sound familiar at all?

I too was looking for both films and I believe found them. The first movie was made for TV in 1976 called, "Dawn." It's about a teenage girl from the US heartland who ran away to the west facing big city life. She struggled to survive and became a sex worker.  The movie focuses a lot on her. However her boyfriend, Alexander, who was with her in the first movie had a sequel in 1977 called, " Alexander: The Otherside of Dawn," focusing mostly on his plight. I hope those are both the movies you've been looking for. I'm not 100% sure but the description on line seems like they are the movies.  Now I'm planning to see if I can stream them on my TV or purchase the DVD's and once I watch both movies I'll know for sure.

TV movie. Yes, you nailed it. However in addition. the couple wanted to prove how strong their concept of, "love," for each other was and their naive idea of independence from their parents and midwestern way of life. This unfortunatly turned into a  nightmare on the dark side of the west coast for survival for the two in a totally psychological dysfunctional way.

I found both movies on DVD online via Ebay for boy and girl. I believe they were TV movies.  Yes, "TheMikeJustce," nails it. In addition in my view this was a movie of two quite naive teens running away from home seeking their concept of a better and more vibrant life.  They wanted to prove their so called," independence, " from their parents and their midwestern way of life along with their concept of, " love," for each other. However,  the meansstreets of the underbelly of the west coast proved to be a way of life totally not in their playbook. To their misfortune their trek turned out to be a string of nightmares displaying their absolute psychological dysfunctional behavior. One can watch how the way of their maladaptive lifestyles  chosen from what they had to go on, a totally different past rural midwestern inexperience. The two were trying to learn their only way they knew how, to adapt to a severely caustic environment.
