There is a true historical episode that inspired the unusual Union–Confederate cooperation in Major Dundee.The episode was the "Galvanized Yankees" during the Dakota War of 1862 in Minnesota.During the Civil War, Minnesota was fighting both the Confederacy and Native American forces in the Dakota War of 1862. The Union Army was desperately short of troops available for the fighting against the Dakota.There were thousands of Confederate prisoners of war, many of them Texans, being held in Union prison camps. The Union came up with a remarkable solution:They offered Confederate prisoners their freedom from the POW camps if they would enlist in the Union Army and fight Native Americans instead of Confederates.The men who accepted became known as "Galvanized Yankees." They were still Southerners and former Confederate soldiers, but they put on Union uniforms and served under Union officers.And here's the part that sounds remarkably like They actually served effectively alongside Union soldiers. The historical accounts indicate that the Confederate prisoners generally did not create the kind of constant hostility between the two sides that the movie depicts. They fought Native American forces and performed their duties without much complaint.I
