Why are YouTube channels listed on IMDB as 'TV Shows'?

I'd be interested to know if this is now a thing or not or if these individuals have created profiles to boost their SEO?
Overlord, Geeks & Gamers and Nerdrotic share podcast together a mainly make videos about pop culture and comic book films. Its all pretty toxic stuff, but that aside - isn't this detracting from what IMDB is?

If these people are directors/writers/producers then everyone is also one and every video on the internet should be listed on imdb. Sure youtube became a platform to promote self made films/tv shows and Spielberg would have used it in the 70s, but not everything on there should be classified as such.

David Lynch's "Weather Report" and many of his experimental videos have a reason to be on imdb since he is an actual director/writer/producer.

Even James Rolfe has made a movie and he actually directs/writes/produces his "Angry Video Game Nerd" TV-show.

"Geeks and Gamers" is just a 40 year old man talking what makes him mad in front of a webcam.

There is something weird going on here.

I try and click the thumb up on Yokopt's comments but it is disabled. Yet Karen_P's isn't.  Also, there is no option to 'reply' to Karen_P. How come?

I've also had a comment deleted here for some unexplained reason.

What is this site??? Screen grabbing the lot now.

I've been a member of imdb since August 2007 who is worried about the current state of the website, otherwise I wouldn't even be here anymore. I found this thread and gave my input as what CraigDuncan said has been on my head for a long time as well.

Btw, I don't know if you noticed but what you said about "user pop ups" applies to Craig too.

But yeah, anyway, with a moderation like this no wonder why many users have left imdb to other site which have emerged in the past years. Letterboxd for movies and trakt for tv have been way more useful to me in the past 3 years.

I have found out the info I need for my book - minus the guesswork.

IMDB details who is and isn't eligible for credit here:

https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/eligible-credits/GFXKZE9VXLB5CR8M?ref_=helpart_nav_12#

Eligible Credits

IMDb currently lists credits for these categories of titles:

  • Films (feature and short)
  • TV movies (also known as MOWs, short for "Movie of the Week")
  • Made for Video Movies
  • TV specials
  • TV/Web series/mini-series
  • Online videos
  • Videogames/Apps
  • Music videos (should be submitted as a 'Video' in the format: Band name: Song title i.e. 'Pharrell Williams: Happy'. The submission should also include the Genres 'Music' and 'Short'.)
  • DVD extras
  • Commercials

This NEEDS to be publicised because "TV/Web series/mini-series" & "Online videos" basically means ANY online YouTube or another platform creator can make an IMDB profile and list their work. This has blown me away. IMDB has really watered itself down to be a 'free-for-all' - let's fill these pages with YouTubers!

@CraigDuncan

Let's hope it doesn't become a trend or 99,9% of imdb information will be just garbage.

Even porn can have more direction, production and writing than a Geeks and Gamers video.

Its clearly not being checked - so anyone can lie and say they are anything on IMDB. It's proving a pretty unreliable source as a result. I'm pretty disappointed especially with Michelle's reply which ignores my initial point.

I think this is BIG news myself for mainstream media companies and film studios.

Hello CraigDuncan -

As the landscape of entertainment has evolved, IMDb has expanded content coverage and eligibility.

As such, online channel titles and credits are now eligible to be listed on the site as long as the content meets our criteria as outlined on the following guide (look for the section "Online Channels"): https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/title-formatting/G56U5ERK7YY47CQB?ref_=helpms_helpart_inline#

If you have any additional questions please let us know!

@Michelle Hi Michelle. That's as may be, but as I've revealed, it has been wildly ignored. IMDB profiles get high Google rankings - which is why (I guess) these guys are entering themselves with the TV classification NOT as "Online Channels".  That was the entire point I was making.

Here's a list of wrongly entered profiles and shows:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm11059091/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10804950/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11428002/reference (This is a youtube channel not a TV series)

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10913031/ (Yoiutuber not a Tv director)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11101140/reference (YouTube Channel - not a TV talk show)

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10691339/?ref_=tt_rv_t0 (YouTuber / ex comic shop owner - not a TV show Producer & Director

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10975964/reference (YouTube channel not a TV series)

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10995546/?ref_=tt_rv_t0 (YouTuber not a Producer editor director)

And that's just random searches (took me 10 mins).

If the site is not rock solid and an industry 'goto source' for factual info (ie cant be trusted) then I cant recommend pro-membership to anyone. Pick any YouTube channel talking about films and I will bet they have a TV Show credit on this site.

I'm no snob, I like YouTube - but it waters down what I thought IMDB was as literally anyone can say they are a producer there.

Anyway - I think its all been said now and I have my answers. This revelation about how IMDB is abused is a great YouTube video in itself. Thanks for the links.

The guidelines that Michelle referenced say that online series can be submitted as "TV series", so it is not abuse to do so.

Even if a keyword like "web-series" is added as the guidelines suggest, the title is still displayed on IMDb as a "TV series". Even audio-only podcasts are listed as TV series.

At the top of the same guidelines IMDb also acknowledge a need to address changing title types. It is a legitimate criticism that they have not done so sufficiently.

Fully agreed.

It's pretty poor form that the system in place, outlined by Karen (adopting a position of IMDB spokesperson), is such that it is the responsibility of 'customers' to fix this websites fake listings.

Your welcome IMDB for me flagging this issue. I won't invoice you for helping here, but likewise, I won't fix your broken site for you.

I'm out.
