What department should pilots be in?

I'll keep asking these questions and hope they eventually get answers!

Currently, it seems pilots are mostly listed in "additional crew" but shouldn't they be listed in the transportation department? Per the IMDb help:

  • The transportation department includes all transportation-related functions.
  • This includes drivers, shipping, transportation coordination, travel, parking, picture cars, etc.

This seems to include pilots to me.

Hi Adrian -

As you observed the majority of "pilot" credits listed on the site are placed under the "Additional Crew" section, however, I'm not 100% certain on the correct placement.  I have reached out to the editorial team for further clarity, as soon as I have an update I will post the information here.

Cheers!

I quite recently added one ”transportation pilot” and chose ”Transportation Department”. Not sure if the credit just says ”pilot”, though.

Hi Adrian -

The categorization of these credits is dependent on the specific role (ie. what they are piloting and why).  So for example, if the role is literally transporting people to different locations then it should be listed under the Transportation Department, whereas if they are flying a plane that appears on-screen or piloting a drone camera, this would be better listed under "Additional Crew".

If someone is credited on-screen as just "Pilot", you can try to determine the correct category by the placement of the on-screen credit, for example, if they are credited as a pilot among the transportation crew credits, then it likely belongs under "Transportation Department".

I hope this helps clarify!

@Michelle I thought drone operators would belong in camera department, since they operate a form of a camera after all. That's where I add them. There are currently more than 30k drone jobs (combined) in camera department while there are only 100-200 in Additional Crew.

I believe they’re usually listed as ”drone operators” or similar, not really ”pilots”. Pilots probably refer to bigger aircrafts.

I looked up some articles on transportation departments and transportation coordinators, and they don't mention boats or planes. I think it's probably good that most pilot credits are in Additional, along with marine coordinators and aerial coordinators, who work with boat and plane scenes.

@Peter_pbn

I don't agree. Aerial and Marine coordinators are for things that are actually going to be filmed, not for transportation. Pilots are different. They can be for transporting crews to remote locations (which is the case for what I was asking about).
