Videos with no connection to the person

A few years ago, there was a discussion on the Contributors Help message board (http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000042/nest/199272522) about how some clips from the documentary Waiting for 'Superman' (2010) were appearing as videos on the page of George Reeves even though Reeves didn't personally appear in those clips.

Eventually Col Needham explained that the "videos are correctly placed. There is archive footage of Reeves in http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1566648/ so this is not an error."

I asked Col, "Shouldn't he be tagged only if he appears in the particular video?"

Col responded:
We see your point but this could easily be argued either way and we've chosen not to go to that level of present vs. not present detail for practical considerations. If there's a trailer or generic clip then we allow anyone connected to the underlying movie or episode to be tagged as it serves to promote their work on that title. The fact that this is archive footage too definitely stretches this point to the far extreme but we'll still allow it.

Think of the videos attached to a name page as helping customers answer the question "What can I learn about the titles in this filmography through the medium of video?" which is subtly different than "Where can I see this person in a video?"
So since then, I've mostly left this issue alone for a while.

However, I have recently seen that Waiting for 'Superman' is no longer in George Reeves' filmography, not even the Archive Footage section (which is the only place it could be -- he died more than 50 years before the documentary was released). Yet, despite that, there are three clips from the documentary in Reeves' IMDb video gallery.

We can no longer say that these clips help us learn about the titles in Reeves' filmography through the medium of video, if the movie to which they pertain is not even in Reeves' filmography.

Furthermore, if one tries to correct the list of names associated with a video such as http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2301597977, one will find that there aren't any individual names associated with the video. So I don't see a way of submitting a correction.

To summarize: how can we get these clips, from a movie in which George Reeves has no IMDb-listed credit, removed from Reeves' video gallery?

Hi gromit82 -

Thanks for reporting this problem and making valid points.

First, concerning the information about linking Video's to a name page, the response you received from Col is correct and still stands as our current policy.  However, since Mr. Reeve's is not credited with an "Archived footage" listing on this title and there is no cross-reference within his filmography to "Waiting for Superman", I have unlinked the Videos from his page.

Second, concerning the issue you mentioned about requesting to add/remove names through the Video Report, I see that you can still search and request to add a name, but I'm not certain why the already linked names are not displayed for correction.    I have reported this error to our technical staff who will take a look as soon as they can.

Michelle: Thanks for fixing George Reeves' video gallery and also for referring the general issue about removing names to the technical staff.
