Unnecessary crew credit attributes

In recent months there has been a significant increase of attributes added to major crew credits. These attributes don't add additional information but essentially repeat the role the person is credited for. For example, the director gets the attribute "directed by" or an editor has the attribute "edited by". An example for this is "The Old Guard 2", especially the producer credits. Personally, I think these attributes are completely unnecessary and should be deleted. How is this supposed to be handled? Does IMDb want these attributes to stay or can we submit requests for deletion?

The producer credits do not have attributes, they just have the occupation "produced by". It is IMDb which displays them in parentheses.

That is not true. If for example you would correct the producer credits for "The Old Guard 2", you will see that all seven regular producer credits don't use the "producer" flag from the drop-down menu. Instead somebody added "produced by" into the attribute field (only visible after selecting "correct" and then "check these updates"). This results in the "producer (produced by)" listing I'm referring to. For comparison, check out the producer credits for the first "The Old Guard" - in that credit section the producers are listed only with "producer". On a side note, the ability to include screenshots would be really helpful...

What you call the attribute field is the occupation field.

@Elwood_Blues Thanks for the feedback. This is a long-time requirement and is documented in the attributes guide at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/attributes/GJNF5SNFE43G4S22 specifically: “For crew roles the attribute is used to record exactly how a person is credited on screen. For example if a composer is listed in the credits as "music by" this should be reflected exactly in the attribute field.” We are aiming to record the actual credited crew role as accurately as possible. This is also because at a future date we may reorganise which credits belong in which departments, so it is important to have the most detailed record of what was displayed on screen. Hope this helps.

The director guidelines say, "please don't include "directed by" or similar attributes".

Then this boils down to a display issue. When a listing has an occupation field, the site should display just that occupation field next to the name. Instead, the site shows the occupation and then the occupation field. For example, a directors listing with the "directed by" attribute is currently displayed as "Director - John Doe director (directed by)". Same with producers credits. Is this the way it is supposed to be?

@Peter_pbn Thanks for flagging the inconsistency in the guide; we will have that outdated sentence removed.

@Elwood_Blues Yes, the current display behaviour is intended, although as you note, it could be simplified at a later date (there are larger issues to fix first).
