Uncredited Writer "Characters Created By" Policy Change

Hi all,

We are pleased to announce a change to our writers policy which has been updated in the guide. Please see the below.

We will no longer be accepting any
uncredited "characters created by" credits on any title adapted from an existing source. The complexities and ambiguities in the creative process across writers involved in the genesis and the specific version of a character that appears in any adaptation means that it is not feasible to accurately represent their individual input. Please note that this policy does not impact credited "characters created by" credits, we will continue to list any "characters created by" credits that are credited on screen.

Thanks,
Will

Thanks for the announcement.

I can understand where that is hailing from even though in my humble opinion abundance of uncredited character creators listed on some titles was more of a positive tendency.

Important question arises though: should such credits be moved to "miscellaneous crew" where they reside in many instances of WGA blocking the uncredited writer submissions?..

I do wonder if there is merit in a "source material" identification data type being specified and implemented, but perhaps there are already keywords for that purpose.

Hi Nikolay,

These are no longer valid as filmography credits in miscellaneous crew either.

Thanks,
Will

Hello, Will.

Great thanks for clarifying.

Another question, though: if character design in live-action adaptation of something is based verbatim (or close to that) on an original appearance in illustration and/or comic book could/should we possibly add them as uncredited "character design: Character Name" to Art Department? There are many cases of artist listed there for their painting and designs being used (Heorhiy Narbut and René Magritte are among the examples).

What the hell imdb for years people like Bill Finger and Steve Ditko
have gone un noticed in the comic book world
whilst rich people like Bob Kane and Stan Lee (rip) have enjoyed sucess.
People like me go along and try to correct history
by saying who created what characters and suddenly its no good for you

Adding credits to comic book adaptations
Every time I add the credits of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
to include "based on Marvel's "X-Men" Comics"
to IMDB's X-Men: The Animated Series page
it gets rejected and I have no idea why

I believe this to be disrespectful, and a bad move on your part.
