TV Shows with special episodes

With a new season of "Gold Rush" (tt1800864) coming soon, I was looking at the episode listings and noticed that a large majority of the "special" episodes have been attached to season lists with episode numbers that aren't consecutive, and air dates that are out of order. Sometimes these episodes aired outside the regular season (as filler), and sometimes they aired in season, but at a special time, and not part of the on-going story-lines. I think that most of these "special" episodes had been added to the series without season and episode numbers, so they ended up in a large pile of "unknown" episodes that were un-ordered, and I think someone tried to tidy things up, but in doing so left us with a confusing mess. Maybe by allowing us to see episodes listed by date order in addition to season/episode order number. The current mess of tacking them onto seasons with episode numbers that make no sense is not a good solution.
