TV Series which have letters in their Episode Numbers
Hi
I am currently working on a TV series Brookside
(1982) in which some episodes are numbered 640, 640A, 640B and then 641. There is nothing different about these episode except in some cases additional episodes were shown rather than the usual two a week, so for whatever reason the producers chose to number them in this way.
I had this issue with another series Emmerdale (1972) but in this case only one episode was numbered this way, so it appears in the “unknown” season column and not listed in its correct place:
tt11708590
However, Brookside has several episodes like this and other than listing various episodes “out of order” in this way, I’m not aware of any way around this.
Is there any way to list/create two or more episodes with the same number, for example entering the episode number as 640/I, 640/II etc? This doesn’t seem to be possible, in the same way a letter can’t be added.
I would appreciate any advice.
Many thanks

Hi @CaptainSiCo,
The sequence numbers should be based on original air date, not production order [https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/episode-guidelines/GDF7HR6CCCBKU3CP#overview].
When you see the on-screen numbering such as 640, 640A, 640B, then the episodes should be submitted correctly as 640, 641, 642, depending on the dates of release. I do not like the next thing, but according to IMDb guidelines, if 640A and 640B were released as additional episodes beyond the season airing, then depending on situation they can be submitted as "zero" episodes like 1.0, 2.0, and so on.
If the episodes numbered 640, 640A, 640B on-screen have the same title, then my suggestion is to treat them as parts and submit this way (but with proper numbering):
S1.E640 ∙ Deceived
S1.E641 ∙ Deceived - Part A
S1.E642 ∙ Deceived - Part B
If the episodes numbered 640, 640A, 640B on-screen have different titles, then they should be submitted as they are released (640, 641, 642) without any mention of the production numbering ("640A" and "640B") because this is avoided (see the above linked guide). However, if you believe the production numbering is an interesting fact, then such information can be submitted as Trivia.
I hope this helps

@CaptainSiCo,
There is no official interface to make the edits in bulk. However, you could save a few weeks of your life when using the direct links to those parts of submission form that might be needed (as you described above).
To start with, I prepared kind of a map on the unusual episodes which may be of special interest when planning the whole process:
And here below this message I'll try to publish the complex links. The episodes are ordered by release date, so when processing row by row you can see that some episode numbers go not ordered -- you know better what should be corrected, either date or sequence number.
Good luck.

*This post has been marked as “private” for some reason, which isn’t helpful!
Actually, I wonder if you (or anyone) can explain this issue, which is kind of related.
I’ve been working on the series EastEnders - tt0088512 - and when editing the credits of some actors who appeared on the show, on entering the edit screen to show a list of episodes they appeared in, certain episodes appear at the start and out of sequence. I’ve noticed that these episodes all have an (I) after the episode number in the edit screen. (This was what made me wonder if two episodes with the same number could be created).
The screenshots below should show what I mean - in this case when editing the “cast” credits of actors Perry Fenwick -
nm0272129 - and June Brown -
nm0113942.
Only one episode exists with the number 1860, 1861 and 2526 respectively and outside of the editor, these credits show in the correct sequence. Have two episodes with the same number been merged at some point, but even if so, I wouldn’t expect this result:
