Trying to revise cast listing

I've been trying to revise a cast listing to add a brief description to a handful of entries, but have been rejected twice:

230805-212212-382000

230806-112939-951000

As I noted in the second submission, very few of the characters - all of whom are based on real people - are addressed by name in the film, and I believe the brief notations for a few of them would help to distinguish them for viewers, particularly because few of the actors are readily familiar (none of the first 3 credited cast are in the top 160,000 in STARmeter rankings, and none of the first 7 are in the top 10,000). I realize this could easily be regarded as a sensitive title, and therefore overly elaborate or biased descriptions should be avoided, but I think some minimal additions would be appropriate.

Hi @scgary66 -

IMDb's principle for cast credits is to always follow what's listed in the onscreen credits. As the credits in the referenced submissions currently match the onscreen end credits for this title, they are deemed correct and therefore the attempts to modify them have been declined.

Please see our cast/acting credit guidelines for more information.

Cheers!

@Ozzy Actually, the guide says that "Character descriptions must be limited to the context of the film, and including extra information that comes from other sources than the title is not permitted." A separate guide states that "the character name shouldn't be descriptive, unless absolutely necessary to identify the actor." Extra information from within the film that helps to identify the character has always been permitted by IMDb, especially when 1) The character's name is rarely or never used in the film, and 2) The onscreen credits provide a limited ability to distinguish between characters. For instance, if three actors are listed as playing Officers #1, 2 and 3, but they're addressed/identified by name in the film, the names have always been permitted for addition to IMDb's cast listing (e.g. Officer #2 - Hansen). And other times, the screen credits are based on the character name in the screenplay, but the name is never used in the film, so some sort of description is important to identify the actor (e.g. Callahan - Bartender). As I said, these are minor, specific additions that would be more helpful than intrusive.

Officer #2 - Hansen has never been acceptable as far as I can tell, unless said actor was credited this way or was not credited with a character name. Cast listings should reflect the credits. Almost always, extra details are added by people flexing that they know more. If the character needed more explanation, that's up to the title designer.

The separate guide, Characters, makes it fairly clear in the introduction that the part about character descriptions is only relevant when you don't have a character name on screen. The main Cast guidelines are arguably less clear.

@Peter_pbn For the record, I was trying to amend the credits for United 93 to note the actresses who played the purser and flight attendants; as I noted, the characters are rarely addressed by name in the film, and the added info would help to distinguish them from the passengers.

@scgary66

Sounds like trivia would be the right place to add this as the cast listing should reflect the actual cast listing of the movie.

Hi @scgary66 -

IMDb has never permitted extra information from within the film to identify credited characters other than the way in which they appear in the onscreen credits. IMDb will only permit necessary character descriptions when a character is not mentioned in the onscreen credits (in a TV episode for example) or if the role is uncredited (a background player, e.g. Officer #1). If a character does not appear in the onscreen credits but is mentioned by name in the title, the character name or a description would be permissible but they should be listed with the uncredited attribute.

As per both @adrian and @Peter_pbn and the guidelines mentioned, IMDb cast listings should always reflect the onscreen credits and therefore the character descriptions in the above referenced submissions are not permitted.
