Track contribution problem: "approved" gender change turns to "declined" after page merge

A very common data issue I encounter on IMDb is when there are 2 or more profiles for the same person that need to be merged, but the profiles incorrectly have different genders.  I have learned from experience that a merge submission will not go through if the genders don't match, so I have to first correct the gender of the incorrect profile, then once that submission has been approved, I will be able to submit the profile merge request.

However, what I have noticed from my Track Contribution history, is that once my profile merge request has been approved, my original gender change submission turns to "declined," even though it had been approved.  It concerns me that I am losing credit towards the IMDb Contributor goals because "approved" submissions are falsely being changed to "declined."

Example:  There were 3 different profiles for the name "Skyler Saltz."  All 3 were in reality the same actress and needed to be merged.  However, Skyler Saltz (II) was listed as "Actor" while Skyler Saltz (I) & (III) were correctly listed as Actress.

On February 15, I submitted update 210216-020717-457000 to change the gender of Skyler Saltz (II) to Actress.  Within a few days later, it showed as "Approved."  It continued to show "Approved" until after I submitted update 210319-073521-613000 on March 19 to merge Skyler Saltz (II) into Skyler Saltz (I).  As soon as that new update was "Approved," my original submission 210216-020717-457000 changed to "Declined."

This has happened before and the reason I waited over a month to submit the merge this time was to see if waiting prevented the original gender change submission from changing to "Declined," but clearly waiting did not.  I want to ensure that I am not losing credit for submissions that were actually "approved" just because I have to submit a subsequent, necessary merge request.

Hi vincent_p -

To clarify the issue using the example you provided, as I understand you first submitted the gender correction (from Male to Female) for "Skyler Saltz (II)", this was approved and the change went live on the site and tracking displayed an "approval" notification.

You then waited a little over a month to submit the merge request (from "Skyler Saltz (II)" into "Skyler Saltz (I)"), this was approved and the pages were combined on the site.

You then re-checked the tracking associated with the initial Gender correction and that then displayed as "Declined", is that correct?

@Michelle

Correct.  The original gender correction 210216-020717-457000 showed Approved and the page was correctly changed from male to female.

After the subsequent merge was Approved, the original submission status changed to Declined.

It is saying "Your contribution has been declined.  The item you have submitted is exactly the same as a submission that you have already entered, which is still pending review by our staff."

But this is not true.  I only submitted one gender change, and it was approved.  It only changed to say this after the merge.

I would suspect this is because Skylar Saltz was already listed as a female, so when the system merged them, it realized your previous contribution was now overcome by events.

I've seen this before with contributions I've made and then later deleted. The previous one gets listed as declined.

Hi vincent_p -

Thanks for confirming.  As Adrian mentioned above, this change is made automatically because of the system logic.  As we can only support one gender listing per name page, we will retain the gender on the existing page, and the system will then automatically remove the gender on the page being merged.

Rest assured this automated removal does not count against you.

I hope this helps!
