The Irishman/ I Heard You Paint Houses (title issue)

The rule on IMDb for titles is:

We use the original title of a movie/show in its original language as it appears on screen in the opening credits.

In the opening credits, the title is "I Hear You Paint Houses" and in The Ending Credits the title is "The Irishman".

Theoretically,  that means that the title of The Irishman should be changed and in "alternate title" we should place "The Irishman"  as the alternative title with the following attributes "World-wide (English title) (closing credits title)"

I want to hear what you think about this.

I tried to submit a title correction to "I Heard You Paint Houses" back in September when reports from the New York Film Festival said that was the title card.

I have not submitted it again since, but others may have done. Like you I am curious to know IMDb's position.

Hi All -

We will need to reflect the title that was displayed on the initial screening of the film at the New York Film Festival.  Looking at the NYFF brochure from 2019 (https://www.filmlinc.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/NYFF57Brochure.pdf) it appears the title is listed as "The Irishman", which is the title we have reflected on the site.

Concerning cinephile's mention that most new release titles don't have a title card/opening title credit, we are aware of this evolution and do plan to address changes to our title formatting rules in the near future (as mentioned in our guide: https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/title-formatting/G56U5ERK7YY47CQB?ref_=helpsrall#), however, for the time being we are still abiding by the rule of thumb to: use the original title of a movie/show in its original language as it appears on screen (on the title card) in the opening credits.

I hope this helps, once we do make changes to our guidelines we will make sure to post those updates in this community.

As reported by critics at the time, the title in the opening credits at the New York Film Festival was "I Heard You Paint Houses".

Occasionally there are film where it's hard to discern exactly what the official title should be due to the way it is displayed on screen. In such a case, I would be willing to accept the title used in all the publicity as long as it is actually displayed on screen, which The Irishman is.

Thanks all for the discussion and for sharing your thoughts around our title policy.

This question has been addressed by my colleague Michelle. The current primary title is correct.

Regards,
