Testing Styling Improvements for Contribution on Mobile

Testing Styling Improvements for Contribution on Mobile

We're excited to share that we are testing some new styling changes for our contribution experience on mobile in order to make it more convenient for our customers to contribute.

Some of these changes include:

  1. The 'Submit' button becoming sticky which means you don't have to scroll to the bottom of the form to move to the next page.
  2. Improved styling of the forms so that it is convenient for you to find the desired options, and
  3. Reduced number of options on each page so that it reduces confusion.

Some of you might see these changes immediately but others might not as it's part of our testing strategy. If you have any feedback, we would love to hear from you.

Is anyone else having issues navigating the new Mobile page contributions layout? The "add" credits button was removed when you select "correct/delete" and the new layout is just so clunky looking.

Yes, I'm not sure why reduction of functionality (like being able to correct and add to the same section in one submission) is considered progress.

Previously there seemed to be a focus on providing the same features to mobile and desktop.

"b. Improved styling of the forms so that it is convenient for you to find the desired options"

"c. Reduced number of options on each page so that it reduces confusion."

For me the new layout caused more confusion and is harder to use, not convenient at all.  As the say goes "If it isn't broke, don't fix it".

Something else is going on, whereby the contribution history won't load without JavaScript being available and enabled.

Hi @jeorj_euler -

I confirmed with our tech team that this is expected behavior as the feature relies on JavaScript to fetch data and render it to the page.  Is there any particular reason you would want to disable JavaScript?

Yes, in order to make a copy of all my submissions, I used to be able to fetch every individual page without employing any additional mechanics. This would allow me to search for specific submissions. Also, even with JavaScript operational, one of the Web browsers I use won't load the contents of the submission form. When I observed what page elements the browser was fetching in the background, I noticed that some of the connections were returning HTTP error 400. I adjusted my cookie settings to make them more permissive and disabled some addons, but that didn't help. No errors show up in the browse's console logging facility.

I can't stand the newer Mobile editor (the one that was changed several months ago). It lacks the necessary options it used to have and which the Desktop version has always had. The format looks sucky too. The Mobile editor is unusable now by my standards.

For instance, when Correcting data, there is no drop-down to also Add at the same time. And vice versa.

There are no checkboxes to Correct All, or Keep Unchanged, or Hide Kept.

These all disappeared when you "updated" the mobile editor. They are still in the Desktop version.

There are a few other lacks I can't think of at the moment. Ones that the mobile editor used to have, but disappeared with this new (worse) version.

As for the format and the look of the new version, I won't go into details as I'm sure other contributors have already covered and complained about it. The old version was nice, though you did have to scroll sideways for some fields; at least that's been corrected.

I'll stick to using the Desktop editor, on my mobile device, until you at least restore the missing options. (Can't edit without them.) Even though I have to scroll sideways and zoom in and out all the time.

Also: The javascript in both editors is problematical: those buttons are too close to other links and the "working" icon animation is on the wrong button.

Well, you're absolutely right, Mvybuf.

I understand it as a simplified form, which may have some benefits. But I would almost always prefer the desktop form, especially because of the ability the correct/delete and add a section in the same submission. The 'Hide Kept' checkbox would also come in handy on mobile to avoid too much scrolling.

There was an official post about the feature here:

@Peter_pbn Yes, but that thread is from 7 months ago, posted by an admin Michelle, and the last response post was also 7 months ago (yours one of them, where you pointed out the same deficiencies). Obviously a closed dead thread because nobody cares and nobody listens. Only 3 people responded to the original post.

And now I see my thread (with your response the same as before) has been merged into this dead-end thread, where admins are ignoring us. Merging WITHOUT REPLYING is apparently IMDb's way of shutting us up.

The deficiencies in the mobile editor have not been corrected. Several features have been taken away, making the mobile editor useless. Taking away features that make it harder or impossible to use it, is not an "improvement"!

Hey @Michelle hey @Bethanny is anybody listening? You opened this thread soliciting comments 7 months ago and nobody is listening or responding. Not to Peter_pbn, not to @jeorj_euler both from 7 months ago, and not to me a couple days ago. You just shove my new post over into a dead thread!

Actually, merging the other thread into this one will increase the visibility of the concerns being raised, in the sense of reducing the risk of the inquiry being lost in the sea of other threads. I do believe somebody working for IMDb is listening, but we probably cannot reasonably expect a fix or an enhancement to pop any time in the immediate future.
