I get your point, it can be a spoiler, but there can be other instances where the character just does not appear in the episode but shows up in following ones, for plot sake. So it looks rather tricky to determine whether the number is a spoiler or not.
I normally don't have a problem like that, since I won't even look at the IMDb title page for a movie or series until I've finished watching it, unless I don't happen to mind in a particular instance. Nevertheless, this idea is a good idea, provided that the feature would be something adjustable via Site Preferences.
