Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)

On the 1997 Worldwide Box Office webpage:  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/world/1997/   "Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)" is not listed, whereas on the "Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)" webpage https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0120179/?ref_=bo_se_r_1 it has grossed $164,508,066.  Why is this so?

Hi NoWhereMan -

I just reviewed the1997 Worldwide Box Office List you reported and can confirm that the title "Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)" is listed.  However, I did note that the Worldwide gross dos not reflect the $164,508,066 gross as reported on the Box Office Mojo title page.

I have filed a ticket for the appropriate team to investigate.

Cheers!

@Michelle   Thanks, but I was hoping IMDb would see the larger problem with many of the entries:

Many of the entries with no Foreign totals have the same problem as before -- the "Worldwide" totals are from the "Original Release" fields.  It would be better if the "Worldwide" totals were from the "All Releases" fields.  For Example, the entry "Men in Black":

"Men in Black"  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0119654/?ref_=bo_rl_ti

The "All Releases" field gives a "Worldwide" total of $589,390,539  whereas the "Original Release" field on the same webpage gives a "Worldwide" total of $250,690,539.  The "1997 Worldwide Box Office" webpage  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/world/1997/  is using the "Original Release" field rather than the "All Releases" field value.  IMDb's database program will have to be slightly modified to correct this problem, but IMDb must do it for possibly hundreds of films.

Again, thanks for looking into this.

ps:  if IMDb does modify their database program, can they put the Domestic Release Date (month/day) on the "Worldwide Box Office" pages? (for example on the https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/world/1997/  and similar pages).  It would be nice to sort the data by their release date (domestic).

I believe the "Original Release" worldwide values are incorrect for many films.   If this problem was solved, it would solve the problem on the "1997 Worldwide Box Office" webpage (since it is linked to this value).

@NoWhereMan Hi!

Thanks for the feedback regarding this, I have filed a ticket to the appropriate team for further investigation on what the root cause of this problem could be.

Cheers!

Thanks for looking into this.  I can always go back to the "Title Summary" page when I'm in doubt about a certain figure.

As I have perused IMDb's Box Office webpages, I am always impressed by the wealth of info knowing full well that this was a massive undertaking to research, collate, and present all this data for not only for the US domestic market, but for markets around the world.  I thank your team for putting this all together and making it freely available on the web.

@NoWhereMan Hi!

So we got an answer from the Box Office team. The issue is that for a certain number of films we have a grand total for how much money they have made worldwide or internationally, but no visibility into how much of those total should be assigned to individual releases, areas, or even date ranges. Rather than randomly assign or amortize the money to releases/areas/dates just to make the math work, we display the grand total against the title since that preserves the accuracy of the data without introducing any data we can't justify at the release level. Unfortunately this means that for some films the totals don't add up. We regularly liaise with studios to try and resolves these issues, however we have learned that in many cases the studios themselves don't have data precise and detailed enough to always make the math add up. Box Office Mojo policy is to only display data we are certain of, so in some cases there are gaps and inconsistencies.

Cheers!

@Bethanny   There is a simple solution to this problem of deciphering the past.  Create a new column on the "Worldwide Box Office" page:  an "All Release" column.  Rename the current "Worldwide" column as an "Original Release" column.  This somewhat conforms to what is done on the "Title Summary" pages.

As of now, for older pages, most of the "Worldwide" values are simply "Domestic" values (which we know cannot be true but is explained in your answer above), and this makes the pages look odd and can lead to errors (which is the reason for this post: "Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)").

Thanks for looking into this and for your in-depth response.  It really clears up a lot of questions I had.
