specials are not part of a season...

We've been here before.

There is an ongoing problem with the label 'unknown' for series specials which do not form part of a specific season. Less experienced editors, more often than not, seem to add the specials onto the beginning or end of seasons which they clearly do not form part of, in some instances in fact the specials aired years after the season which they have been stuck onto has ended.

A solution would be to introduce a new label 'specials' which would mean all of the specials (like Christmas and charity specials etc.) could be listed under, rather than under the current label 'unknown' which is open to misinterpretation and causes confusion as well as extra work.

The label 'unknown' is an immediate invitation for less experienced editors to 'correct' this and tag specials onto seasons erroneously, thinking they are 'tidying' or helping where this is definitely not the case.

This has happened on countless occasions on many British sitcoms I have edited and as such I have had to reverse these edits on scores of occasions. I have requested that the episode number/title be 'locked' but by and large either this has not occurred or perhaps there is currently no facility for imdb staff to lock this(?)

Other websites including for instance BBC/ITV/Channel 4 etc. already list their sitcoms in question with all of their relative specials, as just that: specials, and not as ordinary episodes tagged senselessly onto full seasons complete with a season/episode number. DVDs also list specials separately. imdb needs to do the same.

If we had a separate label for specials this problem would be resolved and no longer crop up in the future. The pages concerned would also be much clearer and allow users to view a list of all specials in date order rather than have to search through all of the seasons to which these specials clearly do not belong.

An example right now is the series Miranda - the BBC list the final two episodes as specials: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00w7dv9

imdb (at the time of posting this) has them as series 4 - but there is no series 4 -

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4258886/reference and

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4320808/reference

I had previously deleted series 4 and marked them as specials, but another editor has converted them into a season 4 again!

I have just now submitted the change to revert them to specials.

I recently had to revert all of the One Foot in the Grave https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006xtkc/episodes/guide

Christmas specials etc. to their correct status of specials on imdb - they had all been tagged onto the ends of seasons, despite being broadcast years later. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098882/reference

This is bonkers. I pointed out this problem a couple of years ago, but the issue has yet to be addressed.

My submissions to correct the Miranda specials have been accepted this time as have the ones for One Foot in the Grave. Though for as long as the ridiculous 'Unknown' label is used by imdb, I guess there will be editors who come to 'tidy' and pop them onto the end of series which were broadcast possibly years before.

Edit: It is already in the idea section. But it hasn't been taken on board.

Hi Dale79, Im sorry you have an to make these corrections multiple times. I have added a note to stop this from happening again on the titles you mentioned however it is not scalable to do this on every that this would apply to.

Im also sorry that your suggestion in the ideas section has not been actioned. I believe that the current modelling of our episode data makes it difficult to create a new type like this. However we will be looking to make improvements to this in the future to make changes like this easier.

A note in the episode guidelines about such specials and the option to leave them without an episode number might be useful.
