Should “national-film-registry” be a keyword?

Every year since 1989 the Library of Congress has added about 25 films it deems “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” to the National Film Registry (NFR). Each film added to the registry has the keyword “national-film registry” added to it. The NFR listing is also added to each film’s Awards section.

I remember years ago when contributors added such keywords as “best-picture-academy-award-winner” or “golden-globe-nominee”. When the validity of these keywords was questioned on the old Contributors Help board, IIRC, it was decided that no award-related keywords should be allowed because they are not related to the production of the film.

In any case, "national-film-registry" is a valid keyword for titles such as These Amazing Shadows (2011) or this podcast, both of which discuss the NFR itself as a primary subject, while not being inductees themselves.

As for adding it as a keyword to titles inducted into the registry, yes, I agree that this is not really a valid use of the keyword system. However, I understand that the users adding it as a keyword have somewhat of a good reason for doing so. Adding it as a keyword is basically a work-around that allows users to filter their lists to see which titles on that list have been inducted into the registry. Of course, a filter capable of doing this already exists in the Advanced Search, but this filter is not accessible to users viewing a list page directly.

If IMDb were to add an 'awards' filter to the currently available list filters, it would render the "national-film-registry" keyword obsolete, and nothing would be lost by deleting the keyword from all of those titles.

Hi @david_glagovsky -

As @timothy_gray_el34lojg1aih1 mentioned, we wouldn't accept that keyword as a way of grouping those registered titles, but if the content of a title addresses the "national film registry", such as the examples @timothy_gray_el34lojg1aih1  mentioned, the usage would be acceptable in those specific instances.

Thanks!
