Self - Hostess?

If one tries to submit credit for a woman as a "hostess" of a television program, the IMDb software will automatically change it to a "host" with this explanation:

The following fixes have been applied automatically.

Host/Co-Host
Female television presenters on IMDb are usually referred to as ' Self - Host' or ' Self - Co-Host' as opposed to ' Self - Hostess'.

I agree with this policy as to women who are television presenters, generally speaking.

However, I am dealing with a documentary TV program where a woman is identified in her on-screen caption as a "hostess" in a social context; she is not the presenter of this or any other TV program. Yet I can't describe her as such in the Cast credits.

The "hostess" to "host" fix should be a yellow warning, rather than an automatic fix, to allow for credits that actually contain the word "hostess" in this situation.

Hi gromit82 -

Thanks for calling out this contribution experience.  Concerning the "Self" character auto-conversion from 'Self-Hostess' to "Self-Host', this is an intentional contribution redirect as our preference is to list all presenters as "Host".  For the example you provided where the role is not a presenter but the individual is credited as themselves as "Hostess" (in a social context), as per our preference, this credit should be listed on the site as "Self-Host".

However, if there is a fictional cast credited character role of "Hostess" we will still allow this to be listed as a cast role.

I hope this helps clarify!

@Michelle

"For the example you provided where the role is not a presenter but the individual is credited as themselves as "Hostess" (in a social context), as per our preference, this credit should be listed on the site as "Self-Host". "

Can you (or anyone else perhaps) explain this? I fail to see the rationale behind this.

@Marco Hey!

We appreciate your feedback on this, but this is just how we prefer to have it listed on the site.

Cheers!

@Bethanny Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the usage of Self - Host vs. Self - Hostess. I'm talking about the fact that IMDb lists Self - Host, even in cases where the person appearing on screen doesn't host the show, but is a host(ess) in a social context, as already pointed out by @gromit82 .
