Same movie listed as both a movie and TV show episode - The Good, The Bad, The Hungry

The movie The Good, the Bad, the Hungry (2019), directed by Nicole Lucas Haimes is listed both under tt10267622 as an episode of 30 for 30 and separately as tt10181606. These entries are both for the exact same movie. On July 8 I submitted 220708-182033-914000 to merge the titles under tt10267622, but I have not yet seen the merge happen.

I also submitted the following as further explanation:

This film was made for ESPN's 30 for 30 series as the 32nd episode of the 3rd season. It did initially premier on April 26, 2019 at the Tribeca Film Festival but then was released on television on ESPN as part of the 30 for 30 series on July 2, 2019. These two entries are for the exact same film and thus I believe they should be merged.

Can someone please let me know the status of this request, and if it was rejected why it was rejected?

Thank you.

This is one of the cases where both should exist but credits should only exist under the first release, in this case the movie. The episode needs to exist for completeness sake but should be a "shell episode". I have never gotten an answer for exactly what a shell episode is and how we determine it. This happens a lot with PBS shows that show movies within the framework of a TV Series like POV.

See this thread which still remains unresolved.

@adrian Thank you! I had guessed there was an official way to handle this, but I couldn't find it. This sounds like the correct situation, even though the solution still seems to come with a lot of problems.

Hi @brianrisselada  & @adrian -

If the episode is a rebroadcast of the film title, then it is correct that the episode title listing should remain as a shell-episode (this means that the episode title will be listed with no cast/crew to prevent duplication).

I have now adjusted the episode title so that it will be listed s a shell-episode.  The changes should be live on the site shortly.

Cheers!

@Michelle

My question from the previous thread still remains. How do we know it is a shell episode and how do we set up shell episodes?

Hi @adrian -

I just replied on the earlier thread you referenced, however, for convenience I will also include the information here.

Currently, there is no obvious indicator on the title page to identify that the title is a "shell episode", however, there are certain rules that apply to shell episodes only which may help identify it as being a shell episode, this includes:

  • Will have a trivia item mentioning that the title is a rebroadcast
  • Will have a "Edited From" movie connection
  • There will be no listed cast or crew on the title page, and the cast/crew data sections  will be marked as "Complete"

IMDb staff will also take internal steps to prevent any incorrect merges, credit additions, etc.

I hope this helps clarify!
