Removing the budget number from a project.

I entered a budget number based on an estimate but it's not correct.  I want to remove the number entirely until I can put in the verified amount.  When I remove the amount from the budget field and try to submit the change, I get an error that seems to indicate that I'm not able to leave the amount field blank.  How can I do this?
