Ratings Injustice

My theatrical film centers on several very controversial social media influencers that have a very active community of trolls that hammer their social posts and book reviews on Amazon with the worst possible reviews and comments. Though the film has only shown on a single night so far, and is set for an encore release in April, this troll community hammered the film with 1-star reviews (101 to date) immediately after the one-day release. The film was #4 in the box office, #1 in PSA, and nearly 80,000 tickets were sold. Reviews on social media are stellar, and we are obviously proud of our work. On the official movie page at Facebook, we encouraged those who actually saw the film to join IMDB and offer their "honest" ratings. Nearly 2500 have done so, and all are above 7-stars, with most being 10-stars. There are virtually zero ratings between 1 and 7, yet somehow the IMDB weighting system is giving us a 5.6-star rating. The actual average rating (mean) is 9.6 stars. How on earth are people who actually viewed the film being discounted, while such a small percentage of dishonest 1-star trolls who never saw the film are being weighed so heavily? This injustice is clearly hurting our film and diminishing the success of my production company and associates. I've been part of IMDB for more than 20 years, and I've never seen such a disparity for any film. Can anyone help me correct this?

Correct… surely IMDB will correct this?

If there are any sockpuppet/bot accounts involved, then it would be the IMDb company's responsibility to suspend them, and that goes both for the ratings above five and below six, on the scale of one to ten. Otherwise there is nothing to "fix", as there would be nothing broken in the first place.

No evidence of bots. I’m confident all 2500+ of our positive reviews are actual ticket buyers, while it’s obvious the 101 1-star votes are non-viewers. Read the 200+ reviews. The actual mean is 9.6. Something is wrong with the system.

I don't seem much evidence either way. Just to note, most likely nothing can be done to limit the impact of who would be referred to as "meatpuppets" (the Wikipedians' term), lending credence to the possibility of the IMDb staff opting to ignore this matter, after performing whatever due amount of investigation.

Often the question of collusion comes up too, but such a thing is usually easy to prove with a hyperlink to Reddit or a forum like it, unless they people are congregated weeks ago on 4chan, Discord or something like either of those.

I can assure you that it was easy to encourage 2500 people (among the 80,000 who saw the film) to rate the film. Artificial means and collusion certainly weren’t necessary. And no one can seriously think a 1-star rating is an honest score for a documentary. How do I get IMDB to properly investigate this?

Hi @wcaparas -

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Our staff in charge of the voting system will look at this at the earliest opportunity.  Though no immediate action may be taken, all reports are carefully examined so please rest assured that this will help us fine-tune and improve the effectiveness of our voting system

@Michelle Thank you so much Michelle. Even a cursory review of the actual written reviews and/or a search of #comeoutinjesusname reviews on Facebook will reveal how passionate our audience is about this film. I am more than confident that the positive ratings are all legitimate. Every single media review has been very positive, and several best-selling authors have endorsed it as a "must see" film. Meanwhile, I've seen many 1-star reviews (some have already been removed) that were clearly written by non-viewers. I'm certainly not asking you to remove all the 1-star reviews, I'd just like to see all the legitimate votes from new members (or at the very least the 200+ very positive written reviews) to be given equal weight. Thanks for looking into this!
