Ratings FAQ question

Reading the help pages on ratings again, I am unsure about this statement:

only votes from regular IMDb voters are considered when creating the top 250 out of the full voting database. This explains any difference between the vote averages reported in the top 250 lists and those on the individual title pages.

Is it true that this explains any difference? What about the formula that is described as being used for the Top 250? Doesn't that make a difference?

The phrase appears here and at the bottom of the Ratings FAQ.

Hi @Peter_pbn -

What about the formula that is described as being used for the Top 250?

What formula are you referring to?

Thanks!

@Bethanny

The one described in the Ratings FAQ under "How do you calculate the rank of movies and TV shows on the Top 250 Movies and Top 250 TV Show lists?"

@Peter_pbn Under How do you calculate the rank of movies and TV shows on the Top 250 Movies and Top 250 TV Show lists? we show how we calculate the ranks, on Why doesn't a title with the average user vote of 9.4 appear in your top 250 Movies or TV list? what we say we don't disclose is "the criteria used for a person to be counted as a regular voter", not the formula used to calculate the rank of the title on our top 250. This means in the formula we use and explain, we only include our regular voters.
I don't see a discrepancy here, maybe I am not understanding what you mean, can you explain a little more?

Thanks!

If the formula is used for the ratings displayed in the Top 250 lists and not for the ratings displayed on title pages, then I don't think it is accurate to say that the only difference between the two ratings is that only votes from regular IMDb voters are considered when creating the top 250.

@Bethanny

I agree with @Peter_pbn.

The pivotal word that seems out of place is the word "any," bolded below.

This explains any difference between the vote averages reported in the top 250 lists and those on the individual title pages.

The way to fix this is to also cross-reference the formula itself:

How do you calculate the rank of movies and TV shows on the Top 250 Movies and Top 250 TV Show lists?

The following formula is used to calculate the Top Rated 250 titles. This formula provides a true 'Bayesian estimate', which takes into account the number of votes each title has received, minimum votes required to be on the list, and the mean vote for all titles:

weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

Where:

R = average for the movie (mean) = (rating)

v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)

m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top Rated 250 list (currently 25,000)

C = the mean vote across the whole report

Please be aware the Top 250 Movie list only includes feature films: shorts, TV movies, miniseries and documentaries are not included in the Top 250 Movies Chart. The Top 250 TV Shows Chart includes TV Series, but not TV episodes or Movies.

This may be true now but it hasn't always been true. The Gathering episode of Babylon 5 appears on the Top 250 Movie list for 1996. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! appears on the 1999 list.

@Bethanny Can you describe the changes that were made? I am not seeing them, and neither page originally linked to by @Peter_pbn indicates a recent date for updates.
