Question about Pokémon dubbing

In Pokémon, many voice performances are retained from other versions. Ikue Otani, for example, has her voice kept in various episodes in the United States, Brazil, and likely other regions.

In such cases, is it correct to list Ikue Otani as the voice actor for those respective countries (in addition to the original version), or, since no additional recording work took place, should she not be listed?

Yes—it is reasonable to list Ikue Ōtani as the voice actor for those localized versions if her original Japanese performance is retained in the localized audio, but there is an important distinction.

If the U.S., Brazilian, or another dub uses the original Japanese recording for a character, Ōtani did not perform additional voice work for that language/version. Therefore:

  • Original Japanese version: Ikue Ōtani — voice actor.
  • English/Brazilian/etc. version where her original recording is retained: You can credit her as the original voice/performance retained, but it would be misleading to describe her as having recorded the localized dub.
  • If the localized production re-recorded the character: Credit the localized voice actor instead.

For a database such as a wiki, the clearest approach would be something like:

Ikue Ōtani — original Japanese voice; original recording retained in certain localized versions

rather than simply:

Ikue Ōtani — English voice actor

That distinction matters because "voice actor for [country/language]" normally implies that the actor actually recorded dialogue for that localization.

So if you're deciding whether she should appear in a country's voice-actor list, I'd separate "voice actors who recorded for this localization" from "original performances retained from another version." That avoids incorrectly implying additional recording work.

What you're saying doesn't seem to align with how IMDb works.

IMDb has two separate roles: "Cast" and "Voice Acting - Dub." The specific dubbing role has several languages associated with it. It's not possible to add the tags you suggested.
