In Progress

Putting gender option under Self

When Cast and Self were split into two, the option to click on Actor or Actress for a new name is not available for Self. It's still there for Cast but not for Self. So if you add ten new women to a documentary they default to Male. You then have to go back to all ten women and change their Gender Identity. This requires a lot more work. Is it possible to add Male, Female, Non-Binary as an option for Self?

Please can you provide the 18-digit contribution ID(s) of a set of names/titles which demonstrate this problem?

#260924-184726-293000 I added 9 women. Then had to go back to each one to change genders. #260925-034436-260000    #260925-034357-666000 #260925-034240-326000 #260925-034323-254000 #260925-034205-499000 #260925-034132-810000   #260925-034059-765000 #260925-034024-259000

@ben_hampel Thanks for the example, but the “Self” category is not gendered so we need more details on why you think any new name created in “Self” has been assigned a gender? Specifically using the title in 260924-184726-293000 and the name in 260925-034436-260000 then (a) why did you assume she had been listed as male in the system and (b) what changed after 260925-034436-260000 was processed?

We are likely missing something here and perhaps there’s a display bug on our side which is providing a gender when none has been recorded?

OK I just added a new name to an episode 'Buck County, USA'.     #260927-005309-210000   of course the estimated processing date is tomorrow.

Look for the name Diana Leygerman for this episode     https://www.imdb.com/title/tt45119980 and when you click on Edit Page you immediately notice under Filmography it says Actor Credits. So you then have to go down to Gender Identity and click on female. It'll ask you for a link to prove it so I usually just grab the URL link for the name page once I add the primary image so you can see that the person is indeed a woman.

@ben_hampel Thanks for the example; this does indeed look like a display bug inside the contribution system which is defaulting to only displaying one category of potential cast credits when no gender information is available. We will discuss this with the contribution team and determine the best approach to fix it. By definition these new “Self” names have no acting credits in either cast section, so the form should not be defaulting to actor; the same bug exists with new crew credits too so it is not specific to “Self” either.

Please let us know if there are other places where the problem is visible.

#260929-020802-752000  another example to look at if you want it. All the women need to be updated.

@ben_hampel Thanks again and a ticket is now open (reference: D543878603).

Just to clarify though, this is purely a contribution interface issue.  We simply do not record genders for self credits (nor any other non-cast credit categories) and the form is accidentally defaulting to displaying only "Actor credits" in the menu options when it should also be displaying "Actress credits" too since we have no gender information.

OK but everyone in a documentary or on a talk show etc has a gender. As it is now all new Self males default as male. But the females you need to go back in to correct their gender. Doesn't the gender also affect the wording of the Bio that appears when you also include a birthdate and a death date and marriage details? Back in the day you just clicked Actress when you also typed in Self under Role and all was good. But now it's an extra step and it can only be done individually.  So now with this new documentary 'Kill. Bury. Print." I have to go into nine name pages and correct the gender. Just saying is all.
