Primary images for episodes

I uploaded new posters for each of the episodes in this TV series. The previous posters were either poor quality (out of focus), had extra white space around the borders that cause inconsistencies when displayed alongside other images, or use a different style from the rest of the series. Some episodes did not have any poster associated with them at all.

The images have now been accepted, but I do not see an option to set these as the primary images. I need help with two things:
  • Setting these new posters as the new primary images
  • Removing the lower quality images they are replacing

Many thanks.

Hi C Park -

If you think the episode titles for this series should have different primary images selected, you will need to submit your request through the image report form.  To suggest a primary image change:
    1) Navigate to the image you wish to become the primary

    2) Click "Edit Tags"

    3) If the image is eligible for use as the title's primary, the form will have the 'Primary Image' option at the top, just underneath 'ABOUT THIS IMAGE'. Click the drop-down arrow.

    4) Tick the box 'Suggest as primary image for ...'

    5) Explain 'Why should this be the primary image (optional)?'

    6) Click "Submit"
Note that if you are not seeing the Primary Image section on the form for "Suggest as primary image for...", this means that the image was not uploaded as a Poster, and staff will need to adjust the image type.  If this is the case, please post the links to all the IMDB images here and our staff can take a look.

Lastly, to remove the duplicate, low quality images, please click on the "Report This" link located below the image, choose the appropriate reason and provide details in the comment field.

Let us know if you encounter any issues submitting these image reports!

Michelle,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, this is not working.  For example, take a look at episode 13 of season 2, "Who Has the Frog?".  When I go to the gallery 5 images are shown.

Only 2 of these are of type "poster".

When I select the one I want and go to edit tags, there is not an option to suggest it as a primary image.

The same problem exists throughout the series.

Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi C Park -

Thanks for following up, as mentioned above, if you are not seeing the Primary Image section on the form for "Suggest as primary image for...", this means that the image was not uploaded as a Poster, and staff will need to adjust the image type.   I have gone ahead and made the image type modifications for the images on this series title page, so please try submitting your report again to change the primary poster.

If you encounter any poster images that are still not displaying the Primary Suggestion option, please post the links to the IMDB images here and our staff can take another look.

Thanks, here are the posters (I did confirm their type) for each episode that are not giving the option to make into primary:

Note that the episodes not listed above are currently using the newest poster. I did notice a pattern.  It looks like if there is both a poster and a still image available, IMDb is using the still rather than the poster.

Ah! That is the case! For all of these episodes, "still frames" have the option to be set as the primary image, but posters do not. If there are no still frames, then IMDb will default to using a poster. As soon as a still frame is added, IMDb is switching over to that as primary instead of the poster.

Hi C Park -

Thanks for following-up with all the image links and your observations.  I have filed a ticket with the appropriate tech team to investigate further, as soon as I have a an update I will let you know here.

Hi C Park -

I wanted to follow-up here as I received confirmation from our tech team that when episode titles are concerned, as you observed, only images that are marked as "still-frame" will display the Primary poster selection in the report form, this is because unlike film titles where a poster image is preferred, for episodes we prefer to display a still image from that particular episode as the primary.

Since several of the images you reported are 'poster' images and not 'still-frames', this is why the option to move them in the primary slot is not an option.

I hope this helps clarify our logic, let us know if you have further questions or concerns!

Michelle,

Thanks for your reply. If still-frames are preferred as primary images, why is the image area on episode pages vertically oriented?

Thanks.

Hey,

Thanks for your response.

The image area on a episodes main title page is vertically orientated based on technical convention in relation to all title pages. However, please note that the image pane for the episode listing is oriented for still frames - see the Walking Dead for example:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1520211/episodes?season=2

Hope this helps.

Joel,

Thank you very much for your reply.  I notice that the still frame image pane you mention only appears if you are viewing list of episodes from a PC. No images are shown on the mobile version of that page.  On the other hand, the vertical image on the title pages appears on all versions of the page. Is the page with the list of episodes viewed on a PC more often than the title pages are viewed from all devices?

Would it be possible to select 2 primary images for episodes -- one for the title page and one for the list of episodes page? If not, would it be possible to choose one consistent orientation for both locations?

Should I change resubmit the previous comment as a suggestion?
