Possible duplicate film (Al Reinert's "Audobon")

I was looking at the filmography of Al Reinert (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0718031/), who died in 2018. I noticed that he still has a 2014 documentary titled Rara Avis: John James Audubon and the Birds of America tagged as (completed) without having been released. On the other hand, he also had a 2017 documentary titled Audobon which was released.

Both of these documentaries are about the same person, the painter/ornithologist John James Audobon. Is there any reason to believe that they are really two different films, one of which was released and the other one not? If they were two different films, that would imply that Reinert made a documentary about Audobon but failed to have it released, and then made as his next film another documentary about Audobon which did get released.

I know how to submit a merge for two films which are the same, but I would like to get an opinion from the staff or someone more familiar with either of these films as to whether they really are different films or the same.

Hi gromit82 -

I found a 2015 DCEFF festival screening for "Rara Avis: John James Audubon and the Birds of America" which ran at 91 minutes. As well as subsequent screenings at events and festivals under the name "Audubon" from 2016 onward based on posts on the film's Facebook page.

For the 2017 title listing for "Audubon", I found several references to a 56 minute title featuring the same crew but with the narrator Sam Elliott (ie. Prime Video & Apple TV).

I highly suspect that the titles are the same but are different versions.  If there are substantial differences, we will allow a separate title listing.  I can see that there are clear runtime differences, and for "Audubon" there is a  cast narration of Sam Elliott, if he did not narrate the original film but came on board years later to narrate this separate version, this would be a substantial difference to qualify for a separate listing.

For now, I would suggest that the title pages remain separate unless there is evidence to suggest that there are little differences between the 2015 version and the 2017 version.

I hope this helps!

Michelle: Thanks for the additional info. I see that Rara Avis has now been listed as a released 2015 film, rather than a completed 2014 film, which appears to resolve part of the issue I raised.

I will assume that these should be separate title pages unless I find any evidence otherwise.
