Poor submissions hall of fame?

I'm sure we've all entered some data, only to later retract it, or edit it, etc.

But lately I've been having to delete some howlers. I think it's because I've been watching a couple of mainstream shows for a change, so with a wider audience, there's more chance of wider submissions, and... wow.

I've submitted a number of deletions lately, but one really took my breath away. I won't say what series, but it was set in the early 80s and there's a scene featuring men working on a building site. As they come off, they walk past a traditional "Men At Work" road sign. This was submitted a as goof because......... the band Men At Work weren't known in the UK at the time.

I don't like to be mean-spirited, but... I just had to get it out.

@jeorj_euler The weird thing was, there was even trivia about this "men at work" sign later that I had to delete... it was as if it was an alien object never seen before.

Here's one I deleted from Pinocchio (1940):

Goof: Stromboli mentions to Pinocchio London and Monte Carlo as some of the cities they will tour but as this film is presumably set in Italy it would be impossible to visit those cities by road as London and Monte Carlo are in Britain and a French island.

There were three errors in that one goof:

  1. Stromboli never says they were going to travel only by road and not by sea.
  2. Monte Carlo isn't in France.
  3. Monte Carlo isn't on an island.

@gromit82 Some of them are truly shocking. Often I'll find them under "plot holes", where it's clear the person hasn't understood the film at all. I'll go to change it to "incorrectly regarded as...", but then just go for the straight delete, as you might as well have EVERYTHING under incorrectly regarded for someone.

I always prefer to make use of the "incorrectly regarded as a goof" property, and I don't even remember ever deleting a goof item. I did, however, propose that one of the goof items that a forum participant complained about (regarding Blue in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) be deleted outright, because it would take so much explaining of physics and physiology to make it proper, plus I haven't even seen the particular movie yet. Movie goofs documented on IMDb are not supposed nitpick, so to speak, about misrepresentations of physics found in non-comedy movies, seeing as how popular filmmakers take creative liberties with things all too often.

@jeorj_euler I agree in principle, but when it comes to something like seeing a "Men At Work" road sign, and thinking it's about the band, then there's very little argument to be had that that's "incorrectly regarded..."

You're kidding....you're not kidding? OMG!

I've done some deleting lately, too. I was going to submit a trivia entry, but when I went to the page, I saw that someone else had already written one for it. But it was so poorly written that I didn't even want to attempt editing it! Instead, I wrote my own version and submitted it, then submitted a deletion request for the other one. I'm not kidding, it was about six lines long and had absolutely no punctuation. So if you read it aloud, you'd run out of breath before getting to the end! Its overall grammar was bad, too, not just its lack of punctuation. It was swiftly deleted.

@SoCalGrace No, I wish I WAS kidding. :)

I do find that if I watch foreign language titles, it'll often, naturally, attract trivia that's not written in clear English, so I do a bit of tidying up there if needed.

Yes, absolutely, I do the same with foreign entries. I also try to keep in mind, not just here, but everywhere online, that English isn't necessarily everyone's first language. I take that into consideration when editing submissions.

@SoCalGrace Absolutely, I always do so with care and respect to the original submitter's intentions.

I've had some weird photo deletions recently... I should have screencapped one, as it was for a long-running quiz show, and one of the entries, hidden amongst other snaps for the same episode, had what looked like someone's wedding reception added as one of the photographs.

Also did a deletion last night in trademarks - did Barbara Windsor REALLY have a "deep, sultry" voice?!??

@mkl Wow. Yes, I think there should be a case where some submitters are just banned, full stop. Just as a general rule-of-thumb, if you think the image to a quiz show is your own holiday snaps, that should be an end to it.

A weird "plot outline" here for an episode of MOR BBC sitcom "No Place Like Home" (which was broadcast when Professor Green was THREE):

"World-famous rapper Professor Green takes an intensely personal journey to uncover the truth behind the suicide of his father, and why suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 45. By understanding the complex factors behind it, and the ways it is being tackled, Professor Green highlights the urgency of addressing suicide in today's society."

I'll put that there as it might be nice to put that plot outline into the correct show... when I can work out what it is.

From the keywords department, one trove of bad submissions that comes to mind is the "more than one" keywords.

Just check this link: https://www.imdb.com/find?s=kw&q=more+than+one

These keywords were all added by a top-100 contributor who is otherwise very knowledgeable and useful when it comes to older movies, but he also has been known to come up with some really bad keywords.

In this case, he appears to be skirting the contributions guideline that says keywords should generally be singular, not plural:

Plurals - Use singular words. For example, trains should be train

Here are some examples of his keywords:

This isn't really a "poor" submission, more of a mystery... I've been tidying up the Paul Daniels Magic Show, and one episode had very specific details about a nude model, even down to multiple quotes, trivia points, etc.

I got all the episodes, and double-checked them against BBC Genome, and.... not only was it not in the episode, it wasn't in ANY episode that year.

I felt bad, but I had to delete the lot, wipe it all out.

Maybe as strange is that they'd also linked to the BBC viewers' feedback show "Points of View", citing an episode that he was on. Said episode was on YouTube, so I watched it, verified the correct date against Genome, etc., and... he wasn't on that, either.

There's a show about the 50 greatest magic tricks where this "Paul Daniels and the nude man" apparently featured. Again, an extensive quote, with lots of detail. And... it doesn't exist.

It's as if there's some really kinky Paul Daniels fan that decided to make up his own erotic fiction and post it.

On the profile of Robin Leach, host of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous":

"Judgement day from Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) occurred on his 56th birthday."

WHAT?!!!? Was Robin Leach associated with that movie in any way?

Maybe I need to list how old celebrities were when Bambi's mother got shot.

I had need to add an episode to the BBC's Six O'Clock News, which understandably is sparse. (Seven episodes a week for 30-odd years or more? I wouldn't attempt it).

I get on the title and it's just rammed with JUNK. Pictures of toys, YouTube, hotel adverts, the lot.

Here's one plot summary I've just put in to be wiped: "Princess reveals a secret to Ray while Yo-Yo throws a baby shower for her daughter."

What goes through peoples' minds when they do stuff like that?? And how many more overlooked titles have this kind of spam in them?!!?

I submitted deletion for the following two alleged movie connections, both pertaining to Despicable Me (2010). Apparently, in somebody's mind, Despicable Me referenced the following TV series and film:

"All in the Family" (1971)

When Gru meets the girls, one of them is named Edith. Which is a reference to All In The Family, where Archie Bunker's wife is named Edith.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

When Gru meets the girls, one of them is named Margo. Which is a reference to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, where The Griswold's next door neighbor is named Margo.

This is a prime example of starting with correct premises and ending up with an incorrect conclusion.

@gromit82 The type of thinking that led to those movie connection contributions is exactly how conspiracy theories get started.

Haha. That's why the connections policy allows hardly little more than cases whereby characters mention other pictures by exactly title or exactly a story element unique to the picture.

Wow, this is just sad how some folks either don't understand the system or just want to contribute fluff. I see how the sequence of strings seem to tell a story, so seemingly that kind of stuff belongs in the plot details section.

@jeorj_euler

Yep.

I wonder what country this person is from. They obviously speak English as a second language.

All of these idiosyncratic keywords are on American titles from the 1930s to 1950s -- usually featuring American characters interacting with characters from other countries. Based on the keywords, the person seems to have an old-fashioned, grandiose view of the USA. The keywords really give me the feeling that they have been formulated in 1959 by a Middle Eastern prince who is fascinated with American culture.

I can't resist sharing this set of keywords before I delete it. More than any of the others, this sequence tells the plot of the movie from beginning to end.

I can see the old BBC show The Young Ones might need tidying up. Some weird ones in there.

This one I just deleted because I thought it wasn't a "goof" as much as extreme pedantry:

"While digging his grave, Neil calls his shovel a spade and explains that he always calls it that. He is not using a spade, you can clearly see it is a square shovel."

Loads of The Young Ones "trivia" talk about "foreshadowing", such as:

"Vyvyan drinking a pint of blue liquid which makes all his hair fall out is a strong foreshadowing of Adrian Edmondson (Vyvyan) playing bald character Eddie Hitler in Bottom (1991)."

Adrian Edmondson went bald. I'm sure he didn't pre-plan his hairloss.
