Policy regarding end years of a tv series

According to a post in this thread (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/why-is-the-sinner-showing-an-end-year-of-2018), IMDb doesn't add an end year to a tv series if the series is still airing, even if there is no doubt about the end year. I simply don't understand this and therefore ask to alter this weird policy.
As I've said in the above mentioned thread: "You either know for sure what the end year is and you display it or you don't know for sure what the end year is and don't display it. Whether or not a series is still running doesn't and shouldn't enter into it."
And maybe it's just me and I'm overlooking something here. If so, enlighten me, please :)

Hello Marco
But while a series is still running, can anyone be sure if it'll be picked up for another season?

If you're not sure, you shouldn't add an end year. That goes for all data in the database, so it also goes for end years. However, in certain cases (for example: (almost) all mini-series) it is certain what the end year will be, even tough a series is still airing. So why would you wait in those cases to add information you know to be correct?

Hi, Marco. That's an excellent point, but I can understand the "I will believe it when I see it" attitude, though.

But when will you "see and believe it" then? One month after the final episode aired? Or six months after? Or when the new season announcements by the networks are made?
I just don't see why IMDb doesn't want an end year added when we're sure*, regardless of whether that is before the whole show starts or whether it's ten years after the last episode has aired.

*Sure is always a rather relative term when it comes to tv series because end years can always change. The most extreme example I know: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094540/reference (note that I'm not in favor of having the 2018 episodes attached to the original series. I think they should be two series, given the fact that there's over 20 (!) years between them)

Well, production companies are no strangers to changing their minds.
