Numbering of Doctor Who specials

I have vague memories of a conversation here a few years ago, where there was some discussion over the episode numbering of the five Doctor Who specials from December 2008 to January 2010. I believe the decision was to leave them unnumbered (despite them officially being numbered 4.14, 4.15 etc by the production team on the paperwork), and I think some measures were taken behind the scenes here to stop them being numbered by any future contributors.

I don't agree with the decision to have them unnumbered (apart from anything else it makes things much more confusing and less user-friendly to anyone unfamiliar with the series when "proper" episodes - i.e., not bonus mini-episodes - are listed out of sequence), but I can understand the reasoning behind it. But it creates an inconsistency with the three 2022 specials, which are all numbered as part of season 13. Should these be unnumbered as well, or are these now considered correct and it's the other ones that need changing?

Hi @tom_wake -

We will confirm with our policy team to make sure that is the way to go, if that is the case we will have the episode specials fixed.

Cheers!

I assume this unnumbering is the reason why every actor that appears in these episodes is currently having their credits shoved into the “Self” section.

@Robb356 I don't think so; unnumbered episodes don't usually have that effect. Much more likely it's the "tv special" keyword that seems to have been attached to all of them.

As a user I just want to be able to click "next" and see what the next episode should be. And see a list of Doctor Who shows in order!!

I watched them in order as they were released, no problem, but now re-watching with my kids and literally missing episodes because some are "specials" and some are "episodes". These are 'specials' that are part of the main flow or episodes, so it's not useful.

@gregalex I completely agree; sadly it looks like this is not the IMDb-approved method...
