New category: Collections

I would like to see IMDb add a new category called "Collections." (@Michelle thought this idea might be worth its own thread.)

Collections would group together titles in a more efficient, versatile and dynamic way than the Movie Connections can.

There could be a "Star Wars" Collection with all the Star Wars movies; a "Three Stooges" Collection with all the Three Stooges shorts; a "Tom and Jerry" Collection for all the Tom and Jerry shorts, etc.

We could have overlapping Collections, e.g. "Star Wars - All Related Titles," "Star Wars - All Theatrical Movies," and "Star Wars - The Skywalker Saga."

Each item in a Collection would link to the IMDb page for the title.

And each item would allow only for bare-bones information about the title: maybe a single image and a few notes.

Collections would allow us to collect series within series, typically animated shorts. For example, the "Tooter Turtle" cartoons are segments within two different TV series, "King Leonardo and His Short Subjects" and "Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales." Wikipedia and Big Cartoon Database have a means of collecting series like this, but IMDb does not. (See the list of Tooter Turtle cartoons on Wikipedia and Big Cartoon Database.) A "Tooter Turtle" Collection would list the titles of the cartoons and link to the episodes they came from.

There's a great need for this new category, as evidenced by multiple contributors who try to create fake TV series in order to collect movies shorts and TV movies.

This is an improved update on a previous idea. I'd love to hear your feedback.

@jay_spirit I moved your suggestion to the imdb.com forum. You had posted it at the IMDb poll forum where this kind of suggestion was out of place.

Any staff going to respond to or acknowledge this? I go into more detail about the massive issue this would solve here (of mass spam submissions of fake "TV-series").

And here's an example where someone wanted to collect all the televised baseball games played by the Los Angeles Dodgers. https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/los-angeles-dodgers-is-a-tv-series/68bdb6daff44a43b64b3a60a?commentId=68bdf507b686226e9a3630fe&replyId=68e80d4253b7872ee1d7575

I feel like that's less applicable, since (as one commenter pointed out) those titles were broadcast as episodes of actual existing shows, like Sportscenter/etc. Versus the "Tom & Jerry" or "Looney Tunes" shorts, which while released as standalone short films are definitely connected as a serialized work.

I'd like to see Collections be dynamic and flexible enough to make any kind of collection, including a collection of all the broadcasts of LA Dodgers games, using the existing episodes of various TV series. IMDb may want to limit it to series that can be identified as such. But I hope they'll go further with it.

IMDb already has a list feature which allows people to collect existing episodes and titles and to add notes. As you say, it seems like some people want more than what is already available. In this case it could be about the season structure, cast lists and/or images of a series page.

Maybe IMDb could build on the List feature to give contributors what they want. There's an insatiable desire to turn groups of titles into series, and the List feature as is doesn't cut it. Right now, the List feature doesn't even work all that well for its intended purpose. It does not prevent duplicates, for instance. Lists allow users to add the same item multiple times without warning them they are doing so. You have to go through the entire list to weed them out.
