New Award

As this year’s award season gets into full swing, I hope you might have a minute to consider a new idea.  I have been working on a project for several years and the more I see IMDb in the news, on social media, and watch its growth and direction the more I think this idea is a great fit for the future of IMDb.

In short, the project is an award program acknowledging an actor’s best performances spanning their entire career called the SASS Awards www.sassawards.com

Unlike the existing award shows which result in a single winner for each category for the year, this allows every actor to compete with their own performances over their career to determine what their best work overall and in specific genres.  Imagine the debate of selecting a best overall performance for Daniel Day-Lewis or Meryl Streep.  People who love movies could debate that type of choice forever and repeatedly as new material is produced.

I have developed a website that allows the public to vote on the entire filmography of an actor broken down by genre which means the voting is ongoing as the actor continues to produce more work.  This format allows for several ideas that the standard annual award shows do not.  For example:

  • It encourages fans to watch or re-watch earlier work by an actor to determine if they agree with the current winning position.
  • It promotes viewing the entire filmography of an actor.
  • It is a new way of arranging the awards instead of the repetition of the existing award shows.
  • It prevents “snubs” as each actor has the opportunity to receive their own award.
  • It is constantly changing which encourages frequent review and discussions.
  • It encourages blitz voting when new material comes out to try to sway the vote toward a new winner.
  • It is virtual, which is the current generation’s preference.
  • It could easily be expanded to television performances.
  • It could be developed into part of an IMDb produced annual awards show.

At the time of development for SASS, IMDb was undergoing some changes in the licensing agreements so a different database is currently being used, however, it would be worthwhile to switch if you are interested in the idea.

I understand you are busy working on the next big idea for IMDb and while I understand you already have a rating system for the movies themselves, take a look at my website and see if you agree that this could be a great addition.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Ellen Wilson
