In Progress

Name Field Selection Query

I'll ask as a question but it could be a problem, I don't know until I get a bit of feedback. Might have been brought up before but it's a hard thing to know what to search under.

So just simply, when I add names to the name field on a submission, I'm sure it was way better at giving options than it currently is.

Let me make up an example with a fake name.

I want to add the name 'Ron Toddleoff', so I enter it and nothing pops up in drop down or after a check as being close to it, gotta add it as a new name I guess, but wait, I decide to try 'Ronald Toddleoff' and there's a page and its the guy I want, but why did the system not show it as an option, pretty sure it was great at things like this previously.

So I've had issues with Mike/Michael, Ron/Ronald & Matt/Matthew in last week alone, the system doesn't acknowledge them as options even though the surname is identical and alone should've potentially made it an option, every time I get a name like those I listed, I have to input every variation of their christian name just to make sure if they have a page or not rather than the site doing that work for me like I'm sure it used to.

So is this a thing that's known or am I just imagining it as better?

I know there was a point when the name suggestions were supposed to take into account common variants of names like that. I don't know if they are still supposed to.

In addition, the suggestions were supposed to take existing alternate names (AKAs) into account, like if Ronald Toddleoff already has credits with (as Ron Toddleoff).

@Peter_pbn Yeah the real Ron credit I added the other day, did actually have a attribute like you mention on his Ronald page, ended up he had two pages (Ron & Ronald) as well but both should have showed up especially with uncommon surnames, luckily I'd figured out that the suggestions were no longer operating as they did in past and found both pages and merged them.

As for other two I'm not sure they did and nearly also ended up with me creating a duplicate page but didn't cause I went the extra mile to search the site.

Thanks for your reply.

@VonPunk

Perhaps the specific examples would help.

@ljdoncel posted some similar examples some years ago.

@Peter_pbn Cheers for that. It seems it's always been lacking or it improved and recently started lacking again and my getting 3 instances in a week just drove it home harder.

You want the pages I meant, have to go off top of my head.

I had a Matthew Lively but no such page existed and nothing was being suggested, but I edited to Matt Lively and there was about 3 pages, one was the person I wanted, it shows up now with an aka added.

One was Ronald Baraff/Ron Baraff, they were not suggested together, I ended up merging them together.

Cannot recall the Mike/Michael one.

I did do a Stephen this morning and his page was as Steve, and it showed up also probably because of existing aka's.

I guess that's sort it really, if there's an aka, you're in luck, if there isn't then the system might not give you any suggestions of use, but it really should do.

Hi @VonPunk & @Peter_pbn -

Thanks for raising this contribution issue and providing some recent examples.  I have filed a ticket for the appropriate team to confirm what the current name field suggestion behavior is and address the shortcomings you pointed out.  As soon as I hear back from the team I will relay that information here.

Cheers!

Hi @VonPunk -

Can you provide some further examples of what specific names you were entering that didn't display the suggestions?  Our tech team can then investigate the behavior further.

Thanks!

@Michelle I listed all the ones I could above but now due to merges or (as...) attributes being added they probably no longer register as a problem.

Basically the system was not recognising that Matt Lively should be a suggestion for Matthew Lively till attribute was added

If I find more I'll post them here but I have covid at minute and am moving a bit sluggish on contributing this last few days. Thanks :)

Hi @VonPunk -

Thanks for the latest example, I have passed that along to the tech team.  In the meantime, I'm sorry to hear you have covid and I hope you feel better soon!

@Michelle Thanks, I've kept going, my first time with it, I just feel weird (like a drunkness) rather than sick, I've been luckier than most around me who were all bedridden or hospitalised but are all recovering now, thankfully.

I remembered another, Gabriela Alicea I added to something but her main page is Gabi Alicea, the latter wasn't suggested, I later figured out there was two pages and merged them together, I realise I maybe be fixing all the examples here so no replication of the problem can be done but it's still a plus for the site.

Another example, onscreen credit said 'Gordan Christmas', I put it in, no suggestions anywhere near similar, I then decided maybe it was a typo and changed 1 letter to 'Gordon Christmas' and there was two suggestions of that name, that really seem they should've showed up on first instance.

Also, as there's no good place to ask, outside starting a new thread, can this page (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3345222/) be deleted or merged, it relates to nothing released, and although it appears to be a bad duplicate page of a series (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7229296/) from 2017 with incorrect 2014 date and truncated title, the pages age, show it's likely they intended to make this series years before they actually did and the page was Just forgotten about and replaced by a new one 3 and half years later.

Hi @VonPunk -

Thanks for these additional examples, I have passed them along as well.  Concerning the title page request I have now merged them and the change should be live on the site shortly.

In the meantime, I hope you are feeling better, and hopefully you have some downtime to relax a bit and watch some films/shows while you recover!

Hi @VonPunk & All -

I'm just following up here to confirm that our tech team was unable to reproduce this issue.  If you are still experiencing this problem with the Name Field selection, post the examples here and I will be happy to raise the issue again.

Cheers!

@Michelle Still happens all the time, as a made up example, if I was doing say a name like Greg Liman and he was on here as Gregory Liman (but with no name attribute credits as Greg Liman), the latter probably wouldn't come up as an option. It happened the other day I had a 'Alex Thie' who's on the site as 'Alexandra Thie', a unique name on the site but never was a suggestion but will be now an attribute alternate name is added.

I've got used to now typing variations of names in the boxes to try locate name pages under alternate names with a wider scope than relying on the system to suggest choices that seems to only work if alternate names already exist on a name page.

I'm grateful it was looked into but if there isn't anything technical that can be done to improve it, it's okay.

Thanks Michelle for following up.
