Movie titles not displayed in english

Hello,

Several non-English movie titles are not displayed in English for me. It happens no matter what I select in the country under content settings. For example, the movie at this link shows as: Doo-geun-doo-geun nae-in-saeng instead of My Brilliant Life, which is the worldwide english title. It doesn't change no matter what country is selected in content settings.

imdb.com/title/tt3837820/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_t_1.

I have changed the country to both US and original under content settings. Overall US works a little better as atleas some titles are displayed in English. But with original there no change what so ever. For example, with US, this movie appears as Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6273736/?ref_=wl_li_tt

But with the country as original it goes back to Korean.

I have searched the forum and the internet and there's no solution. The only suggestion by Col on a very old thread was to maintain the Title display country/region as original, which I can confirm doesn't work. Few months back it seemed to be fine and I could see only English titles. I don't know whats wrong and any help will be appreciated.

@subratjain1  Thanks for the problem report.  First, to clarify on original titles -- an original title is how the title was first released in its country of origin, so the examples cited above are correct in that case. You would expect the original Korean titles to display here with the original title setting.

We can only display data we actually have so in the case of https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3837820/ it was missing a local US title until today -- if you reload it now, it should be fine with US settings. You can always add missing local AKA titles via the "Edit page" button on the main title page, or for faster access, on the release dates / AKA title page. For example here @ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3837820/releaseinfo

For further information on updating IMDb, please see https://help.imdb.com/contribution

Hope this helps.

Hi @Col_Needham , thanks for the reply. But why aren't the titles are picked from World-wide (English title). Its maintained for most of the movies and should be defaulted. It was the case a little while ago. Check the following for example. All these have the World-wide (English title), but it's not picked irrespective of the country selection I make.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2085883/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_i_4

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1535491/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_i_3

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5442308/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_aka#akas

Even the one that you corrected had this data but it was not showing as the title. I think if World-wide (English title) is picked in absence of country-specific info a lot of trouble will be solved.

Absolutely, I too cant think of a valid reason for doing so, unless IMDB is planning to maintain a country-specific title for every single listing on the site. @Col_Needham I really hope you guys are not doing this.

@subratjain1  Yes, please see the AKA contribution guide at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/alternate-titles-akas/GBFBWTQG2RLMHSUR and specifically

We are now encouraging the submission of an imdb display title for all known countries, including the country of origin. Previously, submitting an imdb display title for the country of origin was considered unnecessary, as was submitting an imdb display title for a country that was otherwise covered by an International: English title. In order to capture all of the associated alternate title information for a title in full, adding all known country titles will list the details for each country to the Release Info on the associated title page.

There's some discussion around this on an old announcement thread @ https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/alternate-title-policy-change/5f4a79f78815453dba933419 but the guide above has a concise summary.

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham does this mean that the international title is useless?

@subratjain1  We would not say useless -- just that eventually it should not be needed since we will have better coverage on a country-by-country basis.
