Movie reviews are broken on many fronts
I feel passionate about the written review and this time I shall tell everything wrong about the system and would love to see atleast one of these problems fixed quickly.
1) Review process takes seemingly random times. My reviews usually go through in minutes, even on many new releases. This time once again on The Odyssey, my review that I left on 17.7.2026 hasn't gone through for days. This problem is compounding with the next problem.
2) Review sorting is not balanced and outright unfair for everybody except prolific reviewers and very early reviewers. There is no sorting for latest/newest review, meaning that the initial exposure of new review isn't same for everybody. Meaning for example here that my review on 17.7 when published will not go on top of the page on that minute it gets published, because of the sorting is based on WRITTEN date not PUBLISHED date. This renders the review effectivly useless as almost nobody will scroll the reviews that much down.
3) Login to see reviews. This is weird system that I only assume is there for some weird technical reason. This is unfair system, because only featured reviews can be seen without login. Fair system would hide all reviews or show all reviews.
4) Profilic reviewers. This system is odd, because it seems to mostly only reward bulk reviewers. I feel many of the bulk writers do not make reviews that are useful and possibly not even human written.
5) Reviews that undermine the IMDB as databate. Unfortunately many reviews are still written with old newspaper formula, where the reviewer lists facts about the movie that are right in front of anybody using imdb. We do not need somebody to copy the same info on the review. We can literally use the imdb to see who are the actors or directors or cinematographers. If you delete this redundant info, some of these reviews don't even meet the minimum required lenght.
6) Reviews that are there to just love or hate, manifesting as mostly just unhelpful spam in my opinion. Lots of review are mere statements that usually fall into either hating or loving something about the movie without any context. This is 100% useless as these"review" are already expressed with just the rating number user can leave. This is hard problem to solve, but possibly some kind of tagging system that could be used on the front page. AI that would scan the reviews and categories reviews based on few tags. Like audio, visual, story, characters. When user selects one of these, it only shows reviews that tackel these subjects. Or maybe pair it with the summary tags.
