Movie genres

Hello!

I'm Armantas, a coding analyst at Circana. I'm currently working on a project to categorize a large list of movies and TV shows on different devices. We've been having some trouble assigning genres to the content, because different websites have different interpretations of what a genre is.

I'm wondering if you could share your process for classifying movie genres. What factors do you consider? Is it an academic approach, such as using the "story (action) + plot + character + setting = genre" formula? Or is there something else you use?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
