Mini bio not displayed on name page(s)

Hi there,

I've noticed that the mini-bio on the following name page is not displayed.
Instead, there is just an uninformative automatic one-liner.
But when I click on "edit" and then "biography" it shows me the full bio text.

Note: This was the case before I submitted a recent update to the bio, I have noticed it some months back but haven't had the time to ask about it.

This is the page: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0443321/

But I have noticed the same issue on pretty much every page I've visited and I know for sure that some of them previously had proper mini-bios too.
Is this a glitch of the new page design?

Would someone tell me how to fix this or just do it?

Thank you!

Hi @Susanne -

I see the mini bio now displays correctly.

Cheers!

@Bethanny Yes, thank you. Was it due to the update? I think it happened on many pages if not all that bios just disappeared on the page. But I think the first few lines are still visible in list view. Maybe someone should check it on a central level?

@Bethanny Ah, wait a moment: I've seen it displays correctly on the app now but on desktop browser, it's still the same issue. Refreshed the page several times.

@Susanne There was some sort of bug so it didn't update, but it's all good now.

Thanks!

@Susanne Can we know what browser and device you are using? I am on a desktop version and I can still see it.

Thanks!

@Bethanny I am on a Linux Ubuntu Mate 20.04 on the latest Chrome browser but just checked on Firefox and it looks exactly the same as before on both browsers.

Same when switching to mobile view on Chrome on desktop in the developer tools.

Same on a Samsung Galaxy S7 FE tablet with Android on Chrome browser and on a Samsung Galaxy S20+ phone on Firefox.

But it does display correctly on the app on both the last mentioned devices.

The same issue as on the other devices also occurs on a Firefox on a Windows machine. Admittedly, that's an old Windows 7 and not the newest version of the browser. But given that it occurs across all my devices, I don't think it's a device or browser issue (unless Chrome and Firefox are different from other browsers, but they're pretty widespread nowadays).

@Bethanny Also checked the Samsung browser on my Samsung Galaxy S20+ and it has the same issue.

@Susanne Please see https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/common-issues/why-is-imdb-displaying-differently-on-my-browser/GF2ZAR69V859XLHF

In this case, it appears you may have some non-English localisation settings.  What does the language selector in the upper right of the page say (is it set to “EN”) also what country and language are selected on https://www.imdb.com/preferences/general

Even if the language is set to English, try changing them to another value, save the changes and then switch them back to English.

Please let us know what happens.

@Col_Needham Yes, you're right. It was set to German by default and when I switched it to EN (United States), it did display correctly.

But why does it display differently and only on the browser and not on the app? Shouldn't the mini-bios be displayed on all browsers in any language as it doesn't make any sense that people outside the US or with a different default language would be unable to access existing information in English?

After all, anyone checking IMDb for more in-depth information can understand English anyway. And even if not: As long as the information is not available in other languages, isn't it still better to show that it exists in English at least?

Or maybe is it possible to add a "to view the mini-bio switch to EN (US)" hint in the relevant section, so users know how to display the information on their browser?

Anyway, I know now what the reason for the issue is.

Thank you!

@Susanne Thanks for the feedback.  The reasons for the current behaviour are somewhat complicated and mostly related to us only being partially through some of our work on making IMDb more accessible internationally.  This will be addressed over the longer term.
